3 Top Cycling Routes in Grenada

I’ve talked several times about what it’s like to ride a bike in Grenada, but I’ve never really focused on what routes are best.  So it’s time to tell you all about the top 3 cycling routes here in my Caribbean country.

Okay, let me back it up a little bit.  What, you don’t know I live in the Caribbean?  I know it’s sometimes hard to keep track of where people are and what they are doing…..but I’ve been living here and cycling the roads and back roads of Grenada for the past two years.  Without being overly biased, I can tell you that this is the absolute best island for you to take your next vacation….and it’s never too late to start planning.  Check out late deals from www.globallatedeals.com, and then let me know when you’re coming to ride with me.

1.  Entire Island Loop

Although Caribbean islands can be quite small, not all of them are tiny enough to easy ride completely around the country.  The entire route around the island of Grenada may only be about 100kms (60 miles), but it might just be the longest metric century of your life.

Riding-along-the-Ocean
The steep climbs and winding roads definitely make things challenging, but the reason this route is number 1 on my list is because it will be the most rewarding and beautiful ride you can possibly take in Grenada.  The route can be done on a road or mountain bike and can also be divided up into more than one day.

2.  Ride to Hog Island

Number two on my list of best cycling routes in Grenada is the ride to Hog Island.  Although there is a road that leads that way, it really isn’t something you want to take with a vehicle.  Nasty ridges and holes make it almost un-drivable.  But on a mountain bike it’s ideal….and of course you know where to rent yourself a great mtb to rent in Grenada if need be, right?

Hog Island Grenada
The distance to Hog Island from the main road is only a couple of miles, and the path is perfect for a mountain bike.  Once you get to the road that bridges Grenada to Hog Island, you’ll have to park the bike and walk across.  There’s a gate across the road and you’ll have to walk it over from there.

Not too many people can say they’ve taken the bridge to Hog Island, and getting there by bike makes it totally possible.

3.  South Grenada Airport Loop

Roundabout4If there is one place in Grenada where you’re guaranteed to find cyclists, it’s the road between the airport and Grand Anse roundabout.  This section of road is the widest and flattest on the island and allows for better conditions for cyclists.  The complete loop is 5 miles, and it will allow you to crank up the speed and hammer the pedals.

About the only thing missing from this route is an ocean view, but after ripping through a few loops you can stop and hop in the world-famous Grand Anse beach.

So there you have it.   Three must ride routes when you come to Grenada, and they will be rides you won’t soon forget.

Hey there! Our family LOVES cycling and we own an electric bike shop in Dallas. Do you think Grenada is the best Caribbean island to bike? So many of them are dangerous for bikes with cars driving too fast and roads that are too narrow, just not safe. Also, does anyplace there rent electric bikes? If not we may shop our own. Thanks!

Hello there! This is my first comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and tell you I genuinely enjoy reading your blog posts. Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that deal with the same subjects? Appreciate it!

    Hi,

I reserved a 1 week bike rental from Mochaspoke. I have plans to cycle between St. George and Grand Anse. How sketchy is the route between the 2 places? I am used to cycling in Canada on bike paths, and on roads where cars go 60km/hr. Is the speed limit much higher in Grenada? What is the safest route?

What is the safest route?

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
