40 Feet
Have you ever heard the quote, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”? I think it was Confucius who coined that one. How about this one…“The journey of a cyclist begins with the first 40 feet”?
When you set off for a ride, you’ve most likely got an idea of where your journey will take you….but when you’re out there, I would guess that your focus consistently stays on the 40 feet in front of you. You probably take the odd glance left or right and from time to time look a little farther forward to see where you’re going and what lies ahead, but the majority of your attention focuses on the next 40 feet.
It doesn’t matter if you’re commuting to work, out for a quick 20, or riding a century, the journey to your cycling destination is completed 40 feet at a time. It’s funny how the bike can mirror life, isn’t it? “Life really is like a bike ride.”
Just what I needed this morning after my bike ride :-). Thank you, Darryl!
Glad it helped, Daniela. 40 feet might not sound like very far….when you’re cycling at 15 or 18 mph that’s only about 2 seconds in front of you. But when you’re out on a bike that really is where the majority of your focus is at.

Darryl…Confuscious…one of these things is just like the other. Great post 🙂
