A Kicker to Picnic Table
A few years ago, the Chicago Park District took otherwise wasted space under the expressway on Logan Boulevard and turned it into a skate park. Typically, space under the expressway is filled with broken bottles, garbage, and is pretty uninviting. I think this is an awesome way to utilize more than an acre of land in the middle of the city. In the warmer weather, it’s filled with skateboarders and BMX bicyclists.
According to the park district website, the skate park features ” a bowl corner with a spine, smaller quarters with hips, funbox with small flat and down rail, smaller spine and some hips. Around the outside of the park there are some flat rails, manny pad, and a kicker to picnic table.”
Sooooo, I really have no idea what that means. I do know that what these guys do on a BMX bike is pretty amazing to watch.
I better brush up on my BMX terms before I head over there again.
Love the pictures.Really very well done.
I agree! I love when cities find creative ways to use space.
I know. Im fascinated by most
of this stuff too. These and the dirt jump tracks out west here make for great
photo shoots, and for making me wish I was 20, ok- 30 years younger. The full
impact of the utilizing what would other wise be wasted space such as this in
urban areas is yet to be realized. I think that is going to actually take a
generation or so.
Thanks Suzanne, I’ll share
this if that’s ok-
of course! please share. I’m with you on the 30-ish years younger…..ahhhh well.
First of all, they should hire you to take pictures and promote what’s going on at the park. Secondly, I’m proud of cities like Chicago for doing this sort of thing and seeing the value in providing a facility for kids and others to use. Thirdly, this is something I wish we had the money to do in Grenada. It would be huge here and would give so many kids the opportunity to do something that isn’t available here.
haha I’ll see what I can do about that first part 🙂 And I’m proud that I live in a city that recognizes the importance of using space like this
