Summer Moak is a 15 year old cyclist who races for Team Twenty16 Pro Cycling and K-Edge/ Felt Cyclocross team.  She started cycling competitively at the age of 11 and hasn’t looked back.  She currently holds 4 National Records and is a 6 time National Champion.  Her most recent accomplishment was in July 2014 at Jr. Track Nationals in Carson, California, where she swept the podium in the women’s 15-16 Omnium and took home her fourth straight National Championship Omnium jersey.  She also won the 2K Individual Pursuit and set a new National Record of 2:35.255, besting Sarah Hammer’s former record which has stood for over 15 years!

Summer started attending an online/virtual school program last year because training, recovery, and traveling became more demanding.  She is originally from Katy, Texas, but is spending most of her time in Southern California these days.  When she’s not on her bike, you can probably find her at the beach.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
