Why Don’t Bike Socks Last Longer?
Okay, so I’m lucky enough to live in a climate that allows me to go sockless each and every day of the year. But I do wear them when I’m riding. But can someone explain to me why bike socks don’t seem to last?
I have quite a few different pairs of bike socks so at most, I only wear the same pair once per week. My rides are generally less than 2 hours, and I never walk around in my shoes or socks following a ride. So, if my socks are only getting one to two hours of use per week (at most)….they should last at least a couple years right? Yes, even if I ride year round here in Grenada.
I’m not saying all of my cycling socks have sucked in the long lasting department, but several have fallen apart within a year. Some get holes. Other start losing elasticity and don’t stay tight to my skin. What’s the deal?
My latest pair of cycling socks is the Pearl Izumi Attack sock. I’ve only had them for a couple months, but already I can tell they have staying power…..but time will tell. I’ll be sure to update you on how long these ones last and how they compare to other cycling socks I’ve ridden with.
Your Turn. How long do your cycling socks generally last? What brand/pair has held up the best for you?
OMG OMG OMG OMG! DID I SAY OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is so awesome! I am so glad you won this contest and had the chance to visit Lucky’s office and also $750 to Marshall’s! You can do so much with it at that store.
Glad I’ve finally found something I agree with!
I might be beiantg a dead horse, but thank you for posting this!
My cycling socks actually last an embarrassingly long time; long enough that the white parts get very gray and ugly looking, but they are still holding up and have no holes, so I can’t throw ’em out! I’ve had very good luck with Swiftwick and SockGuy socks. My DN has some of the black PI socks pictured in your post, but they are quite new and haven’t failed yet, so I can’t speak to that.
Thanks Emily. Yeah, I’ve had some Swiftwick and SockGuy as well…..I think those ones have lasted pretty long. I’ll see how my PI’s hold up.
‘Cause you’re a hard-core dude and wear ’em out! I’ve had cheap socks fail due to poor manufacturing quality, but I’ve never actually worn out a pair. Maybe that’s the socks’ way of telling me I need to ride more…
I’ve had some cheap socks that last and some better socks that don’t, but I’ve also had the reverse as well. It’s all one big sock mystery.
Swiftwick socks are the best I’ve found, hands down. I have my original pair at 5 years old now. Other brands don’t even come close to comparison. Try ’em out.
Thanks Adam, I appreciate your comments on this.
I’ve got no words of wisdom here. I think I must lift with my big toe because that’s where I wear my socks out.
Hahahaha, yeah….keep that toe down. Does the same thing happen to your non-cycling socks?
Same socks…..same problems….sigh
Hmmm my socks seem to last for years, I literary have cycling socks that are at least 5 years old that are still going strong.
I wonder if it has something to do with how you wash/dry them?
Could be, HG. It really is only a few pairs that haven’t lasted….the rest are doing great. I’ll keep an eye on these Pearl Izumi socks and see how they do.
