Florida Mountain biking on the Mala Compra Trail

I’m not exactly a mountain biker, but from what I know about it I wouldn’t expect Florida to be a hotspot for this sport.

Last week we introduced a monthly mountain bike article from our friends at Singletracks, and it received a great response from our readers.  Greg will be back again each month with a fantastic mountain bike post, but today I’m laying down one for you as well.

A fellow cycling blogger friend of mine recently started up a new company “geared” towards helping businesses with their social media and video needs.  Donald totally incorporated his love for cycling into this new company and must have been super excited about the work they did with www.visitflorida.com.

They put together a video for them on mountain biking and featured the riding that is offered at the Mala Compra Bike Trail in Palm Coast, Florida.

For any of your riders interested in riding this trail, here’s what Singletracks has to say about it:

Mostly intermediate trail, with a few red sections towards the middle of the trail. The trail has great canopy throughout and all hardpack, even in the middle of Florida’s brutal summer. The trail contains some pretty good short technical, challenging climbs followed by abrupt, shifty descents.

For the rest of you (like me) who just like watching great cycling footage, have a look at what Donald and his crew put together to feature the riding of this Florida mountain bike location:

Looks pretty nice. I’m not a big mountain biker, I use my 29er mainly when I need a break from traffic. I’d definitely check that place out if I was in the area.

I’ve actually been there. It’s a nice trail and in good condition. It’s very nice to see you promoting our hometown trail.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
