Learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage for many kids. It gives them a new level of independence, and it’s the perfect toy to enjoy outdoors. Also, in this day and age, when parents often worry about their children spending too much time on computers, cycling can be a great way to encourage youngsters to be more active.

However, actually choosing suitable starter bikes for your kids can be tricky. There’s certainly more to this process than simply turning up at your local toy store, picking a pretty color, and handing over your cash. If you want your youngsters’ experiences on two wheels to be a success, you’ll need to find the perfect products.

Make sure they measure up

First and foremost, you must make sure that the bikes you buy are the right sizes. Children’s bikes are classified according to their wheel diameter. For example, bikes that are intended for two to four-year-olds typically have 12-inch wheels. Don’t be tempted to get bikes that are too big for your children in the hope that they’ll grow into them. This can be uncomfortable and even dangerous for kids, and it can put them off learning to cycle.

Look out for bikes that come with optional stabilizers too, which will help get your youngsters started safely and to build their confidence. It’s also worth getting versions that give you the option of adjusting the handlebar height to achieve the perfect riding position.

Consider balance bikes

Bear in mind though, traditional bike designs aren’t the only option. A rising number of parents are turning to balance bikes as an alternative. These products, which are also known as runner or strider bikes, don’t feature pedals. The designs are easy and intuitive to use, and they can give kids a chance to improve their balance. Ultimately, this can make the transition to pedal-powered products easier.

Then there’s the option of electric bikes to consider available from suppliers such as Tesco. These hi-tech offerings come in a host of different shapes, sizes and styles. From sporty trail bikes, to slower designs that are perfect for using in the garden, there’s no shortage of options. There are also versions that are designed for children who have mobility problems.

As long as you make sure that the products you opt for perfectly match your youngsters’ age, size and ability, you shouldn’t struggle to find the right starter bikes.

Getting the right size is important, but so is getting the right color/style your child wants. The main priority is that the child is happy with the bike and will want to ride it. Let your child pick out a bike they love, and find one in the correct size. Also, RIDE WITH THEM! It is a fun, healthy way to spend quality time together.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
