A group of students from University of Southern California (USC) have what they feel is the answer to bike wheel theft. By racking their educated brains and “thinking like a thief”, they created the patent pending Nutlock design to help with the all too familiar problem many cyclists face. Today, the Nutlock crew launches their Kickstarter...

Loving the Bike TV: Just Go
You won’t know if you don’t go. That’s basically the answer our adventurous Loving the Bike family has taken when making our massive moves around the world. Yeah, we’ve moved to several locations that were all totally new to us without overly researching things or knowing exactly what we were getting into. I might...

Goodfluence Bicycle Tour: Week 8
“Ghandi on a bicycle” continues to roll along the United States. Some people may laugh at my claim, but I have a very good feeling that one day we’ll look upon Rob Greenfield like we do other amazing human beings who walked the earth and changed things for the better. Here’s a few words...

Adjusting Your Reach
Last week, instead of writing this post on dealing with a bike that is off, I wanted to convey my thought processes as I ride such a bike. The bike I ride while I’m back in the US is the first new road bike I ever got, a 2002 Trek 1000. It was my...

Success is for YOU
I can remember it clearly, although sometimes I’m not sure if it was reality or a dream. I was sitting in the waiting room of a physiotherapy office years ago in Canada. I began talking to an old man who had one of those oxygen masks attached to his face and had a canister...

Cycling with Glass on the Road
As I showed you in this video a couple weeks ago, the people of Grenada are shaping up their bodies for Carnival which is now pretty much under way. Along with the fitness shape up, from the extra broken glass I’ve come across on the roads….a lot of people are also getting their drinking ability in shape...

Loving the BITE: Oatmeal Cookie Fuel
A client recently asked me what I thought about using Oatmeal Cookies for fuel. It happened to be a food he loved, a food he’d look forward to mile after mile, and one he could easily make ahead of time. It also happened to be a great idea. Unlike most cookies, oatmeal cookies are...

The Smell of a Grenada Ride
I just got home from my ride, and felt the need to write about the smells I took in today. Yeah, you heard me right….Smells. I don’t seem to ever recall a ride where I noticed smells like I did today. Sure there are times where I’m behind a garbage truck or going past...

Loving the Bike TV: Envision Where You’re Going
For this week’s episode, I’m leaning towards “loving life ON the bike”. Most weeks I talk about how little things in life off the bike can help you live happier and chase your dreams. Well, even though this week’s message focuses on the bike….the same idea can be used in all areas of your...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
