Post Cycling Massge

I don’ think of massage as just a way of pampering my body, but as a way to help improve circulation, range of motion, and muscular efficiency.  But most of all, I look at it as a way of smoothing out all the wear and tear my body takes from hours in the saddle.

Even when are bodies aren’t aching, there is still tightness and tension in areas….especially those that we use on a regular basis.  When it comes to cycling, the hips, back, legs, and other parts of the body take a lot of abuse.  So the purpose of this article is to show you how massage can help things out.

Austin is a very sports-minded, cycling city…..so it was the perfect location to find some great places to get a post cycling massage.  We selected three companies in order to give you options and to help you choose which place has the best services for your needs.  Here’s what we discovered on our Austin Massage Blitz.

Austin Bodyworker

abwLocated on South Lamar, Austin Bodyworker.  was the smallest clinic we tried out.  Upon walking in, this massage clinic gave off a locally owned and operated feel.  Yeah, many massage clinics these days seem to be more corporate and businessy…..which is cool if that’s what you like.  For me, I prefer the laid back indy feel of a small business.  That is, as long as they have the service to go along with it.

Myself and one other Loving the Bike team member was treated to a one hour massage.  Both of us received a general full body treatment, but Bodyworker offers several different types of massage.

What we liked best:

  • There was no pressure in signing up for a membership or additional treatments
  • Friendly staff, and quiet atmosphere
  • Good location

Massage Envy

headerMassage Envy is a national franchise of massage clinics, and there are several locations all around Austin.  We tried out the Westlake Massage Envy Location. on Bee Caves Road.  I’m not really a big business franchise kind of person, so I walked in with a bit of a chip on my shoulder.  But even though the service seemed more “rehearsed”, we still found everyone there really friendly.

Both of us received Enhanced Therapy options, which I believe is a $12 up-charge from their regular rates.  One of us had the aromatherapy enhancement, and the other had deep muscle therapy.  Of the two, we would recommend getting the deep therapy if you’re going to spend the extra money.

What we liked best:

  • Nice focus on problem areas – first time my hips had felt that good in a long time
  • “Best massage ever” was what my teammate had to say
  • Good attention to detail and in providing what we needed

Austin Massage Clinic:

Austin Massage ClinicThis was the only clinic that I didn’t visit myself, but two of our teammates gave it a try and had a nice experience.  In fact, one of them will be returning for additional treatments.

If we had to call one of these three massage companies more medical than the others, it would be Austin Massage Clinic. Not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing, but we wanted to point that out.  Once again, this clinic offers several different types of massage and can either perform a full body, or focus on problem areas.

Our teammates chose for their massage to focus on nagging injuries and tightness and were able to see how massage is a great way to break down scar tissue and loosen things up.

What we liked best:

  • Good service and follow up attention
  • Educated staff, and able to explain terminology
  • Easy online appointment scheduling

Conclusion:

Massage is a good thing, whether it’s pampering, relaxation, or to get your body in better cycling condition.  I personally love the relaxation of it all and could easily get a massage every day of the week.  If you’ve never had a massage before, source out a good clinic and see how it works for you.

If you live or are traveling to the Austin area and would like a discount at one of the massage clinics listed in this article, contact us and we’ll get you set up.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
