The Little Things


My love of cycling can be complex, especially this time of the year, as I explained last week. Some days it takes all my effort to get kitted up and out the door. Most of the time, though, my love of cycling has nothing to do with what it does for my health, that I’m saving the environment or any other ‘big picture’ stuff. Rather, it’s about the little things.

If we rode bikes only because it was good for us, then we would have an easier time skipping that extra donut in the office, or not spending hours binge-watching Scandal. Rather, it’s something about the bike, and cycling, that keeps us coming back for more.

Here are my little things that, over time, add up to a powerful addiction.

  • the feeling of drinking a coffee with a cycling cap on
  • at the start of the ride or race, the sound of everyone clipping in
  • not having to change your line mid-turn on a descent
  • bacon
  • a ride where I feel no pain except for the soreness in my muscles
  • putting a bike together, and finding it fits perfectly
  • completely trusting the person in front of the paceline
  • PRs on an easy ride
  • becoming a salt lick for the puppies at home

Everyone has those little things they ride for, whether it’s having your spouse or kids join in, or finding a new trail in the woods. What are yours?

    Waking up the next day with my thighs telling me it was a good ride.

    The sound of chain on sprocket, wind in your ears and little else.

    The feeling that kicks in 30 minutes after a start in which you felt like a ride was the last thing in the world you wanted to do.

    I wouldn’t so much call these
    little things, sometimes they are all I have-

    Getting away from the sound
    of traffic.

    I spend way too much time
    alone so just running into like minded individuals engaged in a healthy
    lifestyle out on the trails is always a good thing.

    Working on my bike is never
    feels like something I ‘have to’ do.

    Spending time discovering a
    new place, be it urban or all alone in the mountains, from the seat of a bike
    is how I prefer to get to know the world.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.


Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
