The Smell of a Grenada Ride
I just got home from my ride, and felt the need to write about the smells I took in today. Yeah, you heard me right….Smells. I don’t seem to ever recall a ride where I noticed smells like I did today. Sure there are times where I’m behind a garbage truck or going past a bakery and notice the smell….but most rides are pretty much odor-free.
It all started when I took in the incredible smell of what I think was garlic bread. I have no clue where it was coming from as it happened while I was passing a little tire shop on the East coast. But it was enough to instantly go through my nose, into my brain, and make me hungry. Seriously.
I’m not sure if it’s because it was raining, but soon after I experienced the smell of mango. Yes, it’s mango season here in Grenada so they are absolutely everywhere. Several have fallen off trees and lay squashed on the road, and I’m sure that’s where the scent was coming from. I’m a mango-holic so I’m sure you can guess what the first thing I ate was when I got back home.
Finally, there was a the smell of rain. It’s been a while since I rode through a gentle downpour like was happening today, and that unmistakable smell took me back to my childhood. Thoughts of puddle jumping and the freedom of being a kid stuck with me the rest of the ride.
So there you have it, kind of corny but hopefully somewhat interesting. What did you smell on your ride?
We are in Walla Walla, Washington for the summer. On our frequent bike rides, we smell the amazing aroma of grilling onions from all the Walla Walla onion fields in the heat. Never smelled that anywhere else, so it’s been fun. We also frequently notice the smells of farm animals since we’re riding in the rural countryside. Those aromas aren’t quite as pleasant. 🙂
