This Canadian Celebrates the 4th of July on the Bike
As a Canadian living here in the United States, the 4th of July does not have the same effect on me as the citizens who live here. I’m all for a celebration and am happy to treat this day with all the importance and honor that comes with it, but we don’t have any Independence Day traditions like many people do here in the USA.
I may not be an American, but I truly believe in Freedom, Celebration, Independence…and everything else the 4th of July stands for. You could say that the bike stands for these things as well, don’t you think?
Last year I celebrated the 4th with a nice long ride and then good times with my Family, and it will be that way again this year. In fact, I just got back from a nice early ride so that the day can be left open. So what’s different about a 4th of July ride as opposed to a regular Wednesday ride? Well for one, the roads are generally quite free from other riders because most people are at work when I’m out on a weekday ride. With it being a holiday (and most people likely having the same idea of getting their ride out of the way early), it was much more packed out there. The other cool thing was that I saw two different riders wearing a stars and stripes jersey which I thought was nice to see today. I love the patriotism found in the United States and it’s hard not to get caught up in the passion people have for this Country.
So as I cycled along and pedalled past at least three huge US flags waving high above the ground, this Canadian rode today in honor of all that this day stands for, and happy with the fact that I am currently calling this place home.
Happy 4th to all our American followers, and a great big Happy Wednesday to everyone else out there. Of course it goes without saying that I hope all my Canadian friends had a great celebration on July 1.
I got out for an early ride here in St. Louis as well. Happy 4th to you and nice to see that even a Canadian can join in on our celebrations.
