You’ll Never Complain About Road Conditions or 3 Feet Ever Again

This is the cycling video I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time now.  I’m not much of a video editor, but I put this together to give you a first hand look at how my riding looks in Grenada.

Note: Grenada is a totally safe place to ride a bicycle…..for the average cyclist.  I lean quite a bit to the insanely aggressive side, so I make things a lot scarier than they would be for most people.  I don’t want this video to scare you off from ever coming to Grenada to ride a bike…..it really is a great place to do it.

I’ve written many times about what cycling is like in Grenada, and have also posted about how I feel that I own the road wherever I ride my bike.  Well, now it’s time to show you what happens when my attitude is mixed with the road conditions and driving behaviors found on this beautiful Caribbean island that I call home.

You might never complain about road conditions or getting 3 feet of respect ever again.

Now that I have this handy little Sony “Gopro” type camera, there’s going to be many more videos posted.  So watch for riding videos from Grenada coming soon.

Oh MAN, my favorite LTB post of all time! Dude you just don’t know the chills this sends through me. The riding is like SO MANY of my miles and years. Some of those passes with a concrete wall on onside and a review mirror touching you on the shoulder on the other. The video does an amazing job bringing you there but I think it is even more powerful if you have “been there”……. But what set it all off was that song. That song has huge meaning to me and my life and where I am now…….. Someday over a coffee after a ride I will tell you about it. Great stuff my friend great stuff.

Can’t wait, Eric. Yeah, once again you are one of probably only a few people who watch this that will know exactly what this type of ride is all about. Thank you, my friend.

no thanks! I think I would give up cycling if I lived on Granada. On the roads I ride there’s about one car every three days, and our hills are the dykes and the wind. Happy riding Great video Darryl

Thanks, Raymond. I’m sure you’d find a way to ride and be comfortable here.

    Ok, cool video.
But on a more analytical view of the traffic there; It resembled what I witnessed in Costa Rica. It was a bit scary, especially around San Jose where everyone was in a hurry. But after a while I started to notice that even though the drivers operated in a what we would consider a reckless manner, because they were used to seeing slow moving vehicles and various other stuff on the road as well, it all fit, for lack of a better term right now. Even though it was tight quarters everyone used the roadways. Here the trouble seems to be; ‘I didn’t see him!’ – cyclist, carts, scooters, farm equipment, hell- farm animals even, are never really seen on the roadways so drivers are usually taken by complete surprise when they do encounter these things. To the Tico’s it was just another days drive, and everyone made it home safely.

Good point, Daniel. Caribbean people definitely are more aware of their surroundings, but with that said there are a lot of drivers who pass on blind corners and do insane things as well.

Darryl – nice video. The Gopro camera produces very nice shots. I admire your courage. Those were some narrow passes.

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on April 4, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Thanks Tony, yeah very narrow sometimes. You have to have a strong heart.

Wow. I’ll stick to the roads in and around ATX, thanks. Pretty there, though.

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on April 4, 2014 at 1:22 pm

The closest thing that compares to these roads is Hamilton Pool Road in West Austin.

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on April 4, 2014 at 1:21 pm

Yikes, Darryl! And .. what a steep climb to end with every day.

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on April 1, 2014 at 9:04 pm

Julie, you asked me once about what the Woburn Loop looks like. Well, I have the full loop recorded so one of these days I’ll get it up so you can have a look. I’ll let you know when it’s up.

Do you use Strava Darryl. Love that ramp you have up to your house. That must be a killer at the end of a tough spin!

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on April 1, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Hey Tony, yeah I’m on Strava. Friend me up. I only seem to upload my rides every month or so, but they do eventually get up there.

    Great video.

Looks fun to me! I kind of wish that just mixing it up in traffic (or at least filtering) was the norm in North America. Nice vid.

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on April 1, 2014 at 12:11 pm

Hey Patrick, yeah I do get to mix things up on each ride. Come over and ride with me some time.

  12. James on April 1, 2014 at 11:41 am

You are a brave man and also slightly crazy. The roads are so narrow I don’t know how you do it.

  13. Bob Burpee on April 1, 2014 at 9:59 am

Great video, loved the choice of music too.

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on April 1, 2014 at 11:42 am

Thanks Bob, I was listening to that song on a ride and felt it would make a great soundtrack for this video. There will be more riding videos soon.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
