Loving the BITE: Should cyclists go for RAW Power?
When it comes to veggies, the question I’m asked most (beside, do I have to?) is should they be eaten raw rather than cooked? The simple answer in most cases is yes…most of the time. I like to see vegetables eaten raw more than 50% of the time, and when cooked, I recommend following...

Loving the BITE: Watermelon Cooler (Great Recovery Option)
I was in the middle of a 5-hour ride last weekend, and it was hot. For some reason, I couldn’t get the thought of watermelon off my mind. Just seemed so refreshing, and I really, really wanted some. When I got home I did get a melon. But, it sure would have been nice to...

Loving the BITE: Best Ever 10-Minute Fresh Salsa
I have a serious case of writer’s block. Actually, I have a serious case of poison ivy from a recent trail run (which is why I should just stay on my bike). I barely skirted the side of the trail to let an oncoming mountain biker get by. It’s bad. Not just a rash,...

Loving the BITE: “Arnold Palmer” Homebrew Sports Drink
I think Arnold Palmer may have been onto something. Especially when it gets hot out, I like to use easy, refreshing homebrew drinks for fuel. Usually, I mix one made of fruit juice, water, and salt for rides 2 hours and less. Depending on the time of day, I’ll use ice for some of...

Loving the BITE: I Scream for this EASY Coconut Milk Ice Cream
We’ve only got a few more days in May…then, it’s officially June. Officially time for ice cream. I’ve provided this simple recipe in summers past, and thought I’d revive it just as it’s getting hot in 2014. I just so happen to have organic frozen mango chunks in my freezer…just waiting to become Mango Coconut...

Loving the BITE: Delicious Balsamic Dressing that could Change Your Health
Here’s a shocker: I think more of our foods should be made at home. I think when you buy a prepared food at the store, the time you save with buying it rather than making it should be spent checking (and double checking) the ingredients list. I think athletes can stay healthy, recover better, train...

Loving the BITE: New Twist on Old-School Fuel – Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Back in the day, before the gels and bars and chomps, we used banana bread for fuel. And, it was delicious. This week, we’re going for a remake of my old-school favorite. I’m adding in a few ingredients that I now know to work especially well for fuel, and I’m using oats instead of...

Loving the BITE: Ultimate Joint Health Smoothie
I’ve definitely been on a joint-health-kick lately. It’s been all ginger and cherries here at Loving the Bite Joint Health Headquarters. And this week, it’s pineapple and bromelain. Joint health has been on my mind for good reason. We’ve discussed how cyclists can put their knees through almost 5000 flexions and extensions every hour. And that’s just...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
