Beanitos: Should You Become a BeanHead?

I came across Beanitos due to the fact that my friend @BeanitosApril works over there.  She gave my family some samples and we felt they were one super awesome healthy (ish) snack.  So to find out exactly how good and healthy they actually were, I had April send some to our Loving the Bike...

Loving the BITE: Cumin Grilled Chicken Breasts

September 8, 2011

I love this spice.  Most anytime I cook, no matter what I’m cooking, I’m tempted to start shaking it in.  And not with the little holes on the top of the spice container.  Nope.  I use the big gaping spoon-insert one.  Maybe I lack creativity and culinary know-how.  But you can’t argue with delicious...

Loving the BITE: Pan-Fried Tofu with Lemongrass

September 1, 2011
By

Doufu anyone?  Not a typo; just a little Loving the Bite trivia.  This week’s key ingredient, tofu, is a staple of Asian cuisine, and just happens to go by “doufu” in China (“tofu” in Japan).  But what’s that got to do with cycling?  We all know that great cycling requires a healthy body –...

Kelli Talks Iron

During this last year, I’ve spent time gathering more information on my past successes with clients and iron  supplementation, other experts’ opinions, and any further information to form a more aggressive and proactive Iron Supplementation Recommendation for my athletes. You see, I’ve seen a correlation with low iron (ferritin) status and everything from impaired running performance,...

Loving the BITE: Home-Made PB&J

August 25, 2011

It’s a staple of almost all athletes’ diets.  The Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. Whether in daily nutrition, pre-training, during training, or recovery, I’m hard-pressed to think of a cyclist who doesn’t rely on them, at least a little.  This week, Loving the Bite’s bringing you a recipe for this old favorite, using whole-food...

This week, let’s all pucker up for good health.  Yep, we’re going to add a little vinegar to our Daily Nutrition diets for a variety of health benefits.  The kind of benefits that may just keep up cycling longer, stronger, and with a better strength to weight ratio.  As one of my recent clients...

Three Big Dudes and the Bike

As we all know, the bike is a beautiful and amazing thing…but the importance it holds and the personal meaning it possesses differs for each and every one of us. For three web friends of mine, the bike is the answer to achieving their weight loss goals, obtaining better health, and improving their overall...

Loving the BITE: Veggie Omelet

July 14, 2011
By

It’s true, I’ve been called a “cheap.” I prefer fabulously frugal.  Every once in awhile, my husband comes home to a dinner omelet.  No other meat source, just good ‘ol eggs, cheese, and vegetables.  I think it’s delicious.  But really, I also love it because eggs (cage-free and organic) are only $0.15-$0.20 each.  And...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
