Loving the Bike TV: Pedal Through the Bumpy Road

2015

I hope it doesn’t come across as being too corny, but in this weeks edition of Loving the Bike TV I talk about pedaling through bumpy roads on and off the bike. The roads here in Grenada are certainly not smooth, just like some periods of life.  But it’s what you do with those bumpy...

Loving the BITE: I Despise Nutrition Labels

I despise nutrition labels. And even worse, nutrition claims on the front of a package are a joke.  Sound like a rant? I’m just getting started. You read that right. Although the intentions may have been good with both of these, they become little more than marketing and politics in modern day food manufacturing. Why?...

How is Your Cycling Posture?

There are many things that can be done to improve your cycling performance, but one that is often overlooked is posture.  A cyclist might get a bike fit to ensure they are properly set up on the bike, but using the correct posture while riding will further help things out. How do you hold...

The Power of a Tiny Mosquito

Just when I wasn’t sure what kind of motivational Monday topic I would write about today, along came the buzzing annoyance of a mosquito in my ear…….and I instantly knew what I’d be writing about. “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t been in bed with a mosquito.”  – Anita Roddick...

It’s a Family Affair for this Cycling Family

Most families eat dinner together, maybe watch a little TV, go see a movie……..we ride our bikes. It’s what we’ve done for the past 5 years and I can’t imagine it any other way. It wasn’t always like this though…..Before we started cycling, my dad was VERY overweight and never wanted to do anything...

Loving the BITE: My Favorite Energy Bar UPDATED

Hundreds. Thousands. There is no end to your energy bar options. There are some great commercial ones, other bland or cardboard-like ones, and some that are little more than candy bars. Here’s mine. I use this energy bar on rides, runs, and skis. I love it. Just 5-6 ingredients in a food processor, and your...

“I still fall on my face sometimes and I Can’t color inside the lines ’cause I’m perfectly incomplete I’m still working on my masterpiece.” The words above are lyrics from a song called Masterpiece by Jessie J.  I’m using them as my inspiration for this weeks Loving Life message on Loving the Bike TV....

Extended Twitter Personality

Like it or not, Twitter is a part of our communicative world today.  If ten years ago you would have told me that there’s be this online platform where people sent out very short messages each day and used them to communicate and socialize with the world….I would have said you were nuts.  But...

Cycling, Coffee, Beer, and the Goods

I’m surrounded by a lot of like minded people in real life and on social media, and it’s pretty simple to see the commonality between all of us.  Yeah, we all have our individualities…..but there are some common bonds that always come to the surface. I call them “The Goods”.  Those happy things in...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
