Loving the BITE: St Patrick’s Day Special

Loving the BITE: Irish Stew with Ale I have been told that more than a few LTB readers are beer drinkers. And, although there’s often confusion regarding the health benefits and detriments of alcohol, I’ll be happy to set the record straight: moderate amounts, defined as 1-6 oz. glass of wine, 1-12 oz. glass...

STORM Hill Country and Paris-Nice

It might be hard to combine something like the STORM Hill Country Mountain Bike Challenge and the Paris-Nice Cycling Race in one article….but putting them both together in one photo post just doubles the amount of viewing goodness. Check out some photos I took from last weekend’s Mountain Bike Race at Flat Rock Ranch...

Hashtag Tuesday: #ridethroughwinter

For all of you living in places where the cycling streets are covered in white stuff all winter, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, my friends….Spring is on it’s way. I’m definitely a cold weather riding wimp and could never imagine riding through a cold and snowy winter, but I’ve met...

Make it Happen Monday: Arcanum pāx

There is a little known island about half way between the Caribbean islands and the coast of Africa. Its name is Arcanum pāx, meaning “the secret peace”. On this island, the only means of transportation is by bicycle. The only relationships they know are love and peace. And the only thoughts that flow are...

Refueling

March 11, 2011

Question: This past weekend I did a century and had a bonk experience. I forgot my pack with my fuels, so I overdid the lunch with foods at a restaurant all at once (food choices were “heavy” – mashed potatoes, broccoli rice casserole, mac and cheese, and salisbury steak – not the best options)....

France Would Be Nice Right About Now

As spring gently approaches, I’m sure a lot of us have our minds on all the great places we’d like to get out cycling this next year. With the 2011 Paris-Nice race taking place this week, it’s hard not to fantasize about riding over there. I know I’ve caught myself dreaming about it a...

Water on Long Rides

March 10, 2011
By

Question: I’m training for some upcoming races this Spring/Summer. On short rides I tend to just drink water because I don’t want to overuse all the sugary sports drinks. Is it okay to just drink water on longer rides as well (2-3 hours)? Or should I add a electrolyte powder or pill? Kelli’s Answer:...

Loving the BITE: High-Probiotic Yogurt

March 10, 2011
By

What can you get with $60? Turns out, in the healthy food world, not much. A few years back, I calculated how much of my grocery budget I spent on yogurt. Since my husband, I, and both my boys eat it every day, we were nearing $2.00 per day – $60.00 per month! On...

You knew it was just a matter of time before I’d feature #bikeschool in our Hashtag Tuesday series. #bikeschool is that crazy little idea that my good friend @bikerly had last summer….and it just grew, and grew, and grew. Secret Evol Plan It all started as something he deemed a Secret Evol Plan (Evol...

Nutrition Tip March 5 2011

Yogurt Comments: Who would have thought that yogurt could be so confusing?!? An 8 oz. container of plain yogurt will usually have the most calcium. From there, it can drop by 100-300 mg depending on the size of container and other ingredients used which decrease the volume of milk. When decreasing the size of...

Nick Frey: Pro Rider to Boo Bicycles Owner

Personally, one of the best things that came out of last week’s Handmade Bicycle Show was meeting and getting to know Nick Frey. Prior to the show, I had been looking through the list of exhibitors and something about Boo Bicycles caught my eye. That led to the Pre-NAHBS post I did on the company, which...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
