I love bikes. Of course, with a name like Loving the Bike that is pretty obvious. But I love all kinds of bikes. Even though I am a road cyclist, I also love coming across cool bikes of all styles and varieties. So, the other day I was driving in downtown Courtenay and I...

Loving the BITE: Turkey Leftovers & Fit Holidays for Cyclists
If there’s one thing you should do tomorrow, the day after Thanksgiving, it’s got to be to get out those turkey leftovers, and make the opposite of Thanksgiving dinner. What IS the opposite you ask? One word: Tacos. Leftover turkey is perfect for delicous fresh tacos. And I’m not talking just any tacos, I’m talking...

Gearing up for Winter Cycling
Gearing up for winter Now that the winter weather is well and truly with us, the thought of getting out on your bike may seem like a crazy idea. Firstly, the winter weather isn’t particularly good for your bike – mud and grit can damage the bearings, and nobody likes a mucky bike do...

Loving the BITE: Let Your Food Be Your PAIN Medicine
We’ve heard it before. No pain. No gain. And we all know the feeling of being an athlete, in pain. Of course, there’s some pain that you ride through, and should (like the pain of pushing yourself). And there’s some pain that’s an indication to stop. Other pain, is more like soreness, and is...

It’s not about them vs. us. There’s middle ground, to be sure. I’m not talking about the election (thank goodness!). I’m taking about food. Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
