It’s got to be one of the most popular (and repeated) cycling quotes of all time….and who doesn’t just love that Jens Voigt dude? You can’t keep an awesome quote like this one away from Twitter, and #shutuplegs has definitely become a well used hashtag. But do you know the history of “Shut up Legs”...

If the whole #30daysofbiking thing wasn’t exciting and challenging enough, we’ve now got Team #LovingtheBike created to make it even more fantastic. That dude, Sean Mellor from Bicycle Radio just had to stir things and come up with the idea of “Teams” for this years challenge staring on April 1. We’ve had a bunch...

There’s one video clip that I never got around to posting from the 2011 North American Handmade Bicycle Show held in Austin earlier this year. Ron, from King Cage had a simple little display…but this dude caused quite the stir. Ron started King Cage in 1991 and began making bottle cages out of Titanium...

One of the coolest things that I’ve come across since starting this Loving the Bike site is learning about all the people out there living Car-Less. I’m totally amazed by what these people are doing and have the utmost respect for anyone who has chosen to take this route in life. There is also...

I’d have to say that the very first cycling hashtag to ever catch my attention was #30daysofbiking. It was a genius idea by @patiomensch and @zachamon, and officially launched on April 1, 2010 (and I’m still kicking myself for not thinking of something like this myself). On April 1 they’ll kick off round three of #30daysofbiking….are...

It might be hard to combine something like the STORM Hill Country Mountain Bike Challenge and the Paris-Nice Cycling Race in one article….but putting them both together in one photo post just doubles the amount of viewing goodness. Check out some photos I took from last weekend’s Mountain Bike Race at Flat Rock Ranch...

For all of you living in places where the cycling streets are covered in white stuff all winter, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, my friends….Spring is on it’s way. I’m definitely a cold weather riding wimp and could never imagine riding through a cold and snowy winter, but I’ve met...

There is a little known island about half way between the Caribbean islands and the coast of Africa. Its name is Arcanum pāx, meaning “the secret peace”. On this island, the only means of transportation is by bicycle. The only relationships they know are love and peace. And the only thoughts that flow are...

Question: This past weekend I did a century and had a bonk experience. I forgot my pack with my fuels, so I overdid the lunch with foods at a restaurant all at once (food choices were “heavy” – mashed potatoes, broccoli rice casserole, mac and cheese, and salisbury steak – not the best options)....

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
