Bonked in Vonda

July 16, 2010
By

Yesterday morning, I set out for a nice 80km ride to a little town called Vonda.  It was a beautiful sunny day, and even the wind wasn’t as breezy as it has been lately.  I always enjoy the last 10kms into Vonda because it’s an old country road with great views.  I’ve never ridden...

TdF Stage 9: An Inside Look

We’re taking an insiders look at tomorrow’s Stage 9 of the Tour de France. My good buddy, Chris Russell has climbed sections of this nasty Alpine stage and was kind enough to give us his preview (including videos) of what to expect as the riders set out from Morzine.  Here is Chris’ description and comments...

Oatmeal: Good, Better, and Best In my opinion, there is absolutely no better breakfast than Oatmeal.  Now the word “Oatmeal” is a pretty broad term….what I mean by Oatmeal is going to take a bit of a description. First of all, there are 4 main varieties of Oatmeal: Instant Packaged Oatmeal – Not at...

My TdF 2 Cents

With all the incredible coverage floating around out there about the Tour de France and all that has occurred, it’s tough to add anything new or fresh to the mix.  But what the heck, seeing as we’ve now completed the Prologue and 6 Stages, I thought I would lay down a few thoughts and...

The Sufferfest: Indoor Cycling Motivation

For quite a while now I’ve been wanting to check out “The Sufferfest” cycling training videos. David from Sufferfest Studios, Singapore sent me their videos a few weeks ago but since it’s not exactly indoor training season I haven’t been able to give them a test run.  This past Monday there was a torrential...

My First

My First

I had always thought my first bike was a tiny little purple thing with training wheels because that is as far back as my memory takes me.  I’m not sure why, but I had never gotten around to asking my Parents if that really was my first bike or if there were bikes prior...

Speed

June 30, 2010

Are you a speed junkie?  I wouldn’t say that I generally am, but when I’m on a bike it’s a totally different story.  It’s like the faster I’m going, the better I feel.  I really think my mind was made to go the speed of a pro rider….now my body just has to catch...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
