It’s with a heavy heart that I write this week’s Loving the Bite. A car-bike accident has recently claimed the life of another cyclist. A dad. A husband. A life. This time, it happened on Lookout Mountain Road in Golden, CO, a wonderfully fun road route that I ride frequently. Every crash like this is extremely...

Loving the BITE: Powerhouse Hummus
C’mon, who can resist some tasty hummus? It’s creamy, flavorful, and makes vegetables even better. When I think about it, I actually don’t know many people who don’t like it. It’s great for a snack, great added to a lunch sandwich, and great served as a sauce or dip in most dinner recipes. Kabobs, anyone? Just...

I am not trying to start any heated debates today, promise. I will concede from the start the that grill is the king of summer cookery. I get it, I use it, and I love it. But, it’s the slow cooker that’s made me a better rider. That’s right. While any grilling home chef has...

Loving the BITE: Protein Power Peanut Butter Granola Bars (gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free)
Would you consider yourself a “snacker?” I am. And for some reason, this has a bad connotation. For me, it simply means I eat balanced mini-meals, made up of simple real foods, between my larger meals. Generally it’s fruit and cheese, a hard-boiled egg, a yogurt, roasted chickpeas, or something similar. It’s not “snacky...

Loving the BITE: I Despise Nutrition Labels
I despise nutrition labels. And even worse, nutrition claims on the front of a package are a joke. Sound like a rant? I’m just getting started. You read that right. Although the intentions may have been good with both of these, they become little more than marketing and politics in modern day food manufacturing. Why?...

Hundreds. Thousands. There is no end to your energy bar options. There are some great commercial ones, other bland or cardboard-like ones, and some that are little more than candy bars. Here’s mine. Loving the BITE: Will Ride for Bacon
Bacon: The Tasty Sodium Supplement Alright, here’s the disclaimer (a rarity around here!). This may not be the healthiest of my Loving the Bite healthy recipes. It’s true. I’ve given you plenty of those. It doesn’t have to be all-broccoli-all-time. As you’ll read, I do believe bacon is fine here and there (or to be clique –...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
