It’s Easy for a Cyclist to Celebrate Turning 50

In about a month, I jump into a category that I have always reserved for old people. A time of life that always seemed too far off to even acknowledge. An age that was much further along than I’ve always been. On June 17, I turn 50. Just in writing that short simple sentence,...

On Your Bike: Why You’re Never Too Old to Cycle

Over the past twenty years, the number of people cycling to work in Canada has risen by over 87%. Given the positive impact cycling has on our health, this is very encouraging news. However, cycling should not be seen as a young person’s activity. In fact, it is particularly important for seniors to take to the saddle...

A Vegas All-Nighter

If you know anything about me, you’ll know that I’m not much of a wild party type guy.  Yeah, I like to chill out most of the time and I get my adrenaline rush from cycling through the streets of Grenada and spinning for bonuses.  That is my idea of a wild party. But next...

Happy to be Here For the Ride

A thought crossed my mind today.  A thought that has somehow never consciously crossed it before. “What would have happened if my Parents had decided to only have one kid?”  Well, the simple answer was that I wouldn’t be here to worry about those consequences. However, upon more thought….I took it further.  What if...

What Gets Your Butt Out of Bed?

I’ve interacted with a lot of our Loving the Bike readers and have a good idea of what motivates people to get on a bike….but what about motivation for life? What inspires you?  What motivates you?  Where do you get your passion?  All these things are related and it is small and large doses...

Doing It All

If you know anything at all about me and my life, you probably have an indication that I do a lot of “out of the box” stuff.  If I can pride myself on one thing, it’s that I’ve lived a life off the beaten path, and have done more than enough cool things for...

Just Point the Bike and Watch it Happen

Back in my gym rat days, a big part of my life was spent in a fitness center and associating with the people who went there. I remember one day talking to a woman who was a dedicated gym-goer and working hard at getting her body in shape.  We discussed motivation and what she...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
