You aren’t going to believe this one….on Monday I had my first flat tire in two years.  Yeah, it’s been at least two years and over 20,000kms on the road since I last had to change a tube.  That’s like an eternity for a road bike tube.  I can’t even believe it myself. The...

Restaurant Foods At home you can probably make a medium-fat burger, with toppings (mustard, ketchup, pickles, etc) and small bun for about 500 calories without being too strict.  So, when you go out, you may think you’re getting this amount of maybe a couple hundred more.  Think again.  Applebee’s Quesadilla Burger, for example, packs...

Please BE KIND to Cyclists

You just can’t beat the phrase, “Please BE KIND to Cyclists” when it comes to conveying our feelings towards motorists.  It’s a message that all of us cyclists would like to pass along to our machine powered friends….and our spouses, children, and friends feel the same way. On a beautiful Austin morning in September...

Turn Right to Go Left

Once I get on my bike, crank the pedals, and hit the open road….the last thing I want to do is stop.  I like riding like a mad man for my entire route without having to take my feet off the pedals.  I really, really, really dislike it when I have to stop for...

Make it Happen Mondays – 7 Minute Diet

I’ve dedicated all Monday posts in January to “Cycling for Optimal Weight“.  There are a lot of riders out there who are “cycling for weight loss” or using the bike as their way of getting themselves in the shape they dream to be in…..and I honestly can’t think of a better way to get there....

Sports Drinks Sports drinks absolutely have their place when you’re training hard.  But, they are only appropriate immediately before, during and after training when you’re tying to shed fat.  At 120 calories per 16 ounces, they pack on some extra calories and are designed to hit your blood stream fast.  If you’re working out...

#Coffeemates – Fitness Coffee Review

I haven’t been as big a part of it as I’d like, but thanks to my Twitter friend @marijolamarche there is a great group of people who meet up for some good chatting pretty much every morning. Marijo coined the Twitter Hashtag, #Coffeemates and it’s become a place where cyclists (and non-cyclists) can chillax...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
