My internet buddy, Ryan Van Duzer (aka Duzer), takes off tomorrow morning on another incredible cycling adventure. This time he’ll be pedaling down the west coast, 3,000 miles from Vancouver to Cabo San Lucas. What’s the occasion this time, you ask? Well, he lists three fantastic reason for taking the journey: Travel at a...

Nutrition Tip August 7 2010
Be on the look out for products that include high fructose corn syrup. Not only is it high in calories, but it doesn’t trigger the body to feel full. Products that use sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup are actually better for this reason….think of that next time you’re sipping a soda.

Escape From Alcatraz
When my good friend, Tyler Robinson, told me he had won an entry to the 2010 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, I knew right away that I needed him to provide a guest post about it. You see, Tyler has an incredible sense of humor in his writing and I had no doubt he would...

Whole Grains Whole grains and whole grain products contain some valuable antioxidants that aren’t found in fruits and vegetables. They also contain B vitamins as well as Vitamin E, Magnesium, Iron, and Fibre. So how do you get them? Using whole wheat flour in your recipes is one way. You can also look for...

Life In The Big Ring
If you would have asked me at the beginning of this riding season to explain the type of cyclist I am, I would have said I’m a spinner who spends quite a bit of time in the small ring. In fact, that is exactly what I told Victor from Bicycle Lab when he did...

Agave Nectar and Stevia There are a lot of great ways to sweeten things up, and two that I’d like to mention are Agave Nectar and Stevia. Agave is often advertised as a safe and nutritious alternative that can be consumed by anyone, especially diabetics, without the potential side-effects suffered from consuming sugar cane,...

TdF Friday
Two more days until the riders reach Paris and the Champs-Élysées. Tomorrow’s time trial could very well determine who will wear the yellow jersey, and I’m really hoping it is Schleck and not Contador….but it’s kind of a long shot. Here is my recap of this last week of racing and I look forward...

Perspective
In a lot of my recent posts, I seem to be touching on the fact that when I’m out on my bike it’s the only break my mind gets during the day. I’ll be running off in a thousand different directions and trying to juggle about 87 things all at the same time, so...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
