The Scavenger

Growing up I used to go to tag sales and flea markets with my mom. I collect old cameras, so it was always a mission to find one, but anything I thought was neat would get picked up. I love going on the hunt for something, and it’s no surprise that one of the...

I am officially “one of those people.” You know those people, the ones that immediately upload their ride data, before they’ve even taken off their helmet, to check their Strava segments to see if it was a PR or maybe, hopefully, a KOM. I’ve always loved looking at my ride data, trying to connect...

The Rainy Season

The Rainy Season

There’s something about riding in the rain that I’ve always loved. Nevermind the slick roads, wet chamois and the need to clean the bike as soon as you get home, riding in the rain can be peaceful and at the same time exhilarating. The thought that I HTFU and rode when others didn’t confirms...

The Bikes of Georgetown, Penang

Darryl gave me grief last week for sending him a video of me biking around the area, when it looks like any other area in the states, so Sunday I made it a mission to photograph as many cyclists around Penang as I could.  During the week I rarely leave my fortress, so it’s...

Cycling in Malaysia: Observations

Well hello again. Thanks to everyone who commented on my previous post (Loving the Race) as well as mentioned it on social media.  Writing regularly for a site other than my own is a new experience, much like the rest of my life right now!  No one had any racing questions for me this...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
