When we came out with our Cycling for Optimal Weight min-e-book on December 27th, we offered up the challenge (and reward) for all those who would commit to going on the program.  Five of you responded saying you were ready to go after your ideal weight using cycling to help get you there. Out...

Make it Happen Mondays – Adventure Naturals

For this week’s instalment of Make it Happen Mondays, I wanted to highlight a company that brings goodness to your body through 100% all-natural, organic, whole-food energy bars and seasoned nuts to help “Fuel Your Adventure.” Cyclists love to munch on energy bars, gels, and bloks…right?  Most definitely.  But with all the choices out there,...

Biking to Eat

There are countless reasons why I’m Loving the Bike, but one of them is definitely due to my love of eating.  You see, I enjoy being lean and in shape…..and when I’m out packing on the miles on my bike I feel as though I can enjoy the foods I love without the guilt...

There Goes My Gatorade Sponsorship

By posting this, I realize that I’ve lost all hope of ever having my site sponsored by Gatorade (or Pepsico for that matter)…but I thought it made for an interesting story so I’m sharing it here today. On one of the routes that I’ve been riding over here in Florida, I roll past the...

Daily Nutrition vs Training Nutrition

We are very honored to have Kelli Jennings, registered dietitian (RD) guest posting today.  I wish I had even half the nutrition knowledge she has.  Kelli’s post contains valuable information that all cyclists and athletes should be aware of. Like many athletes, you may have found yourself reading the ingredients of your favorite sports drink...

Put This In Your Cupboard

Disclosure: When I wrote this post, I had absolutely no affiliation with Progressive (the makers of VegeGreens).  I simply liked their product and wanted everyone to know how I felt.  As always, the Loving the Bike reviews is totally and completely a 100% honest review. Anyway, after the post went out Progressive found out...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
