The Easy Path

At first glance, it might look as though I’ve taken the easy way on life.  When I was in high school I created a class schedule with as many free spares as possible to avoid more work, I took the minimum required classes to receive my Bachelor of Commerce degree, and I’ve done my best to avoid “real work”...

My Backyard

It was drizzling as I left my house early Saturday morning. The wind was coming from the south and it was strong. I headed that way first. Less than a mile from my house I was stopped at a red light. I had no plan for that morning other than to ride and clear...

Get ’em while you can.  For a limited time, you can buy a pound of berries for just $1.00-1.50 at your local market.  For anyone who’s familiar with berry prices, this is a STEAL.  And,right now, it’s the price of a SuperFood berry often reserved for the Holidays – the cranberry. While they may...

Circling Grenada by Bike

Generally speaking, Caribbean countries are quite small when compared to the rest of the world.  This may be true, but it also depends on how you look at it.  Sure, the main island road that takes you around the perimeter of Grenada is less than 100 kms in distance, but this is very deceiving.  Especially when...

Loving the BITE: Cherry Juice for your Aching Joints

This time of year, as the temperature drops, joints began to feel the pain.  After a season of cycling, many athletes suffer from painful joints, gout, and inflammation.  And, while nutrition isn’t the entire answer for joint pain, many functional foods can certainly help. This week, we’ll take a look at cherry juice, how...

Change….Begins With You

It begins with you… I started to respond to the “Please Stop Killing Cyclists” post, and after a couple hours of writing I realized this might be a better blog.  Whenever I read a story about anyone losing a life in an accident it tears me up, life is so, so valuable and to have...

Stravaholic

I am officially “one of those people.” You know those people, the ones that immediately upload their ride data, before they’ve even taken off their helmet, to check their Strava segments to see if it was a PR or maybe, hopefully, a KOM. I’ve always loved looking at my ride data, trying to connect...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
