Loving the Bike TV: Simplify Your Vehicle

June 18, 2014
By

Living car free is the simplest way to go when talking about vehicles, but there are a whole bunch of other ways to simplify what you drive.  Instead of focusing on bicycle commuting, this time I’m talking about making the actual concept of owning a vehicle more simple. When you can take a vehicle...

Goodfluence Bicycle Tour – Week 2

The guy that I call “the Ghandi of our time” is on week two of his Goodfluence bicycle tour across America.  It would honestly take you hours to go through all the incredible things Rob Greenfield has done over the past couple years, so you’re just going to have to take my word on this...

Why So Serious?

Why So Serious?

Last week I started a new training plan. It’s the first time in a long time I’ll have a prescribed plan for training, and I’m glad I purchased it when I did. The plan is ten weeks long; when I return to Penang I’ll be finishing up the plan with a week to spare...

Words for Paul

Wednesday was the memorial service for my friend who passed away last month. Over the past several weeks planning the service, choosing the caterer, designing the program, weeding through hundreds of photographs (including the one here, labeled “first bike” on the back), and taking care of logistics kept me distracted from the hard part:...

My “Driver Education” Program Caught on Video

June 12, 2014
By

I’ve said many times that when I’m on my bike, I’m very aggressive and won’t take anything from any vehicle.  I call it a positive rage that only comes when I’m training on my bike. Well, here in Grenada I like to call it “driver education”.  Whenever possible, I’ll chase down a vehicle who...

2014 #CyclingWorldCup

2014 #CyclingWorldCup

Four years ago, I came up with the idea of having people tweet out #CyclingWorldCup if their day included more cycling time than World Cup watching.  Well, the FIFA World Cup 2014 kicks off today from Brazil and I’d like to do it once again. There’s no debate that Football (Soccer) is the number...

Loving the BITE: “Arnold Palmer” Homebrew Sports Drink

I think Arnold Palmer may have been onto something.  Especially when it gets hot out, I like to use easy, refreshing homebrew drinks for fuel.  Usually, I mix one made of fruit juice, water, and salt for rides 2 hours and less. Depending on the time of day, I’ll use ice for some of...

Loving the Bike TV: Re-creativity

June 11, 2014
By

As with all episodes of Loving the Bike TV, I lay down some personal advice that I feel helps lead to the life you desire…on and off the Bike.  This week I talk about something that I just decided should be called “Re-creativity”.  Let’s not give in to the throw away culture found in...

Goodfluence Bicycle Tour – Week 1

Our good friend, Rob Greenfield continues his ride across the United States in an effort to promote goodness.  He’s calling it the Goodfluence Tour, and with his infectious attitude of ultimate friendliness, he will be encouraging people to do more good for the earth, their community, and themselves. Why is it called “Goodfluence”?  Well,...

One Man’s Junk

One Man’s Junk

There’s only two ways to head when cycling in Penang, at least from my place. One is south, and that’s either towards the main city or the airport, neither a fun place to be first thing in the morning. The other way is north, and that’s the less populated and more scenic route. It’s...

I Believe in the Sand Beneath my Toes

I Believe in the Sand Beneath my Toes

Call it manifesting your own dreams, or just simply going to where your soul knows you need to be.  Whatever the reason, I absolutely know that I was meant to have the sand beneath my feet. Growing up in the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan, I was able to plant my toes in the sand……but...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
