I...

A few weeks ago I came across what I felt was one of the most powerful posts I’ve read in a very long time.  It spoke very strongly to me and I felt it would make a great addition to our Make it Happen Monday series over here at Loving the Bike.  So today...

Butter Vs Margarine Comments:  Talk about a nutrition debate: margarine vs. butter!  Actually, neither is the best option when choosing a fat for spreading or baking.  Whenever possible, use olive oil, peanut oil, or coconut oil instead.  When you do need margarine or butter, choose butter over margarine.  Instead of opting for a spread...

February 18, 2011

I shot this video last Tuesday, but just now getting the chance to post it.  It hasn’t been as windy here in Austin as it was last week when the “hurricane” winds blew through, but I hope it provides some good advice on what to do the next time you’re feeling blown away on...

My Friends Have Some Wicked Custom Livestrong Bikes

You’ve all likely seen the beautiful custom bikes that Lance had created for the 2009 race season and the “It’s about the Bike Auction“, but have you seen these? A few of my friends have their very own custom Livestrong bikes that are just as unique, and wicked cool. Jon Binsted (aka @LIVESTRONGTEXAS) Bike:...

Hashtag Tuesday: #cyclenerds

The name #cyclenerds conjures up a few different thoughts, but as it’s founder @sarahstanley explains, the tag is intended “to get kids excited about riding a bike.  Maybe girls want to trick their bike out with ribbons & baskets. Maybe its getting the whole family together and going for a ride on beach cruisers.”...

Get S.T.O.K.E.D. For Your Cycling Goals

Like everything in life, it’s a lot simpler to achieve something when you set a goal for yourself and go after it.  I mentioned a simple formula for goal achievement in last week’s “Make It Happen Mondays” post: Create a goal, Get excited about it, and Make it Happen….and this week I’m here to...

Cheese Comments: Regular cheese is going to be high-fat (saturated) no matter how you slice it.  As long s you don’t overdo it, it can still be part of a healthy diet.  Part-skim cheeses, like most available mozzarella, are lower in fat and calories than most cheeses.  Some brands, like Kraft, have calcium-fortified cheeses...

40 Feet

February 11, 2011
By

Have you ever heard the quote, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”?  I think it was Confucius who coined that one.  How about this one…“The journey of a cyclist begins with the first 40 feet”?   When you set off for a ride, you’ve most likely got an idea...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
