A couple months ago @egggman, @bikerly, and I blogged about sharing lessons learned using the hashtag #bikeschool. The hashtag has taught us a lot. Not so much on technical issues, but more about life lessons. We’ve heard about kids flying free without training wheels and what this has meant for the parent. There have been stories shared about mountain...

Water Bottles Revisited – The Clean Bottle
Back in June, we posted an article about How to Clean Your Water Bottle – Shake What Your Mama Gave You. We went over some cleaning methods for plastic and aluminum bottles, and talked about the importance of having a clean water bottle. There were some great replies, including one from our Cyclelicious friend, Richard,...

Nutrition Tip October 16 2010
When is Water more than Water? In reality, not very often. Bottled waters are not regulated and could be filled right out of someone else’s tap. And what about “enhanced water” with promises of energy, vitamins, minerals, and health benefits? There is no evidence that the amounts and types of nutrients added to these water products provide any benefit to our bodies....

Winter’s Coming
If I was back in Canada right now, I would totally be fretting the arrival of Winter. In fact, I would already be upset about the cool weather and lack of good riding conditions. But fear not….I’m in Austin and all is good. But if you are in the situation of the former, my...

Austin Traffic
Just on the heels of “The Old Give and Take”, here I am talking about traffic in the city of Austin. Yes, I did give up some quiet, low traffic roads for what we have here in Austin….but the fact that I’m right now riding in October with warm temperatures is enough to make...

The Old Give and Take
I grew up in a family where one of the mantras was: There is always a give and take…for everything you gain, there is something you have to give up. Being a guy who has had his fair share of change in his life, this phrase seems to flash across my mind quite...

Cramping?…There May Be Something to These Folk Remedies The following tips are considered folk remedies, but I wanted to include them as they may be worth giving a shot. Mustard: For years coaches have given mustard to their athletes with leg cramps. Cramps are sometimes caused by a deficiency in acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that...

Does a More Expensive Bike Make a Better Cyclist?
You’re out riding, and you see a guy (or girl) on a pimped out $6,000 road bike….what’s the first thing that goes through your head? Probably a few different things (and feel free to let me know what those things are with a comment below), but one possible thought is “man, this person must...

The Destressinator 3000 inator
A bike is definitely more than just a bike. This week, I realized once again that many times it also acts like a “Destressinator 3000-inator”. A few times in the past I have blogged about how being on the bike is often my only escape from the insanely busy and fast paced life...

Welcome to Austin
If you didn’t already know….I’m in Austin right now. Yeah, Austin, Texas – The state capital that prides itself on being far from ordinary. In fact, they celebrate being “weird.” Austin is a hot spot for creativity and embraces its community of musicians, artists, entrepreneurs and progressive thinkers. It’s home to a singer named Willie, a...

Nutrition Tip October 2 2010
Ten Things to Consider When Eating Out 1) If possible, check out the restaurant’s nutritional guide online prior to going out. 2) Avoid most appetizers – they are usually refined grains (bread bowls, chips & salsa) or fried. If others in your party are ordering an appetizer, consider getting a salad or broth soup for...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
