Cycling Gear: Does Brand Matter?
It doesn’t matter what product you’re buying, there’s almost always a range of brands to choose from, going from budget to high-end. With some products, it’s incredibly important to stick with the trusted brands, and with others it’s barely more than a name. The question is: does it make a difference when you’re buying...

Life Happens While You’re Making Other Plans
In my opinion, this Lennon quote is the simplest and most accurate depiction of life ever put down in words. Yeah, we’re all so busy. We all have a bunch of things on our mind and dreams we wish to fulfill…..but along the way life is happening each and every day. This is not...

Loving the (Children’s) Bike
Cycling is a liberating, fun and challenging sport that we all enjoy. Going out on your new bike as child is one of the first places you learn independence from parents, a sense of being in control of where you’re going and perhaps the first time you push your body to its limits. Why...

How to Prepare your Bike for the Winter Months
Cycling in winter can be a challenge. If the adverse weather conditions of snow, rain and ice aren’t enough to put you off then the bitterly cold air is enough to un-inspire even the most determined of cyclists. The cold weather can also take its toll on the condition of your bike and can...

Hitting the Deck
I hit the deck today. It was a ridiculous crash, but it still bloody hurt. In the end I have a bruise and scrapes on my hip, sidewalk rash on shin and elbows and in general my whole right side is not happy. I was walking the dog. Well, kinda. I hate walking the...

Ask any cyclist, and they will understand the uniquely cycling-specific principle of N + 1. If you’re one of them triathlete types, or stumbled across cycling one day, N + 1 is the principle of having the appropriate number of bicycles. N is the number of bikes you have now, and + 1 is...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
