Loving the BITE: Hot Roasted Chickpeas (World’s Best Snack)

I can’t stop eating these.  Seriously. I just about ate the whole dang batch.  I hate to brag, but they might be the best snack food in the world.  I’ve saved about 1/2 cup for my family to share.  And the only reason I’ve saved it and not finished them off myself?  To brag...

Loving the BITE: Coconut Caramel Sauce and Optimal Recovery

I’m not a fan of “one-best-way” thinking when it comes to sports nutrition.  It’s rarely the case.  Often, instead, there are many good ways.  Some exceptional and successful athletes use paleo-style diets while others are vegans.  Some eat snacks between meals religiously, while others seldom eat more than 3 squares a day.  Some take...

Loving the Bite: Powerhouse Lunch and Condiment Swap

How would you describe your afternoons? Energized and productive? Ready for a great ride? Or lethargic and ready for a nap? If the latter, you may want to take a look at your lunch.  If it’s typically loaded down with processed foods and refined carbohydrates, you may feel a whole lot better by swapping...

Wonderfully Orange Super Bowl Recipe and Party Tips

Are you ready for some football?  I sure am.  You see, I was literally born a Denver Bronco fan.  I had no choice.  I was born into a family that celebrated Bronco games most every Sunday of the season.   Yes, even those Super Bowl Sundays in the late 1980s.  Those were ugly, but...

Loving the Bite: Protein Bars Exposed (again)

Sure, a “protein bar” can be a good option for recovery after a hard ride, but do they make for good snacks?  As more and more athletes opt for protein bars and energy bars as part of their everyday food choices, it’s important to determine which, if any, works as a healthy snack.  You...

Loving the BITE: How to Achieve Healthy Eating Success this Year

I’ve often said that the cheapest way to lighten your ride is to lose a pound (for those cyclists who need and/or want to).  In fact, you can spend hundreds of dollars shedding a few hundred grams with a new component, or you can shed 450 grams for free by losing a pound.  With...

Loving the BITE: Beet the Bloat Smoothie

Feeling stuffed in the midst of Holiday celebrations? I’ve got another antidote for you.  Last year I introduced a junk food anti-venom smoothie, and highlighted the power of celery to reduce water retention often brought on by too many sweets and salty foods. Often times, while some weight gain during the Holidays may be...

Loving the BITE: Vitamin D and More to Shed the Winter Blues

As we head further into Winter, many athletes feel the drag of the Winter Blues. Why? While there’s not any one conclusive cause, there are many contributing factors that can bring you down when the days are short and the weather is cold. A few include less vitamin D production, more darkness during your...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
