Loving the BITE: Vitamin D for Athletic Performance and Health

“There’s no way I’m deficient…I get plenty of sunshine.” If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it many, many times.  And yet, athlete after athlete is found deficient.  If you’ve never had your Vitamin D levels checked, you may be in for a surprise.  And, if you find your motivation and mood wavering and eventually...

Brooklyn Cruiser: A True Connection is Made

Style, comfort, design, and quality are all important aspects of a bicycle….but for me there is one more element that goes into making the ideal brand.  Getting to know the people behind the company and finding out more about their passion, beliefs, and personality is something we don’t get a chance to do with...

Loving the BITE: Chia For a Long Lasting Energy Source

It’s a sports nutrition superfood of legends.  It’s a fill-you-up nutrition powerhouse breakfast.   It’s a Chia Seed. And, while it may be small, it works wonders to soak in fluids, gel up, and provide long-lasting energy and volume for foods.  Many athletes use it because they’ve heard the stories of amazing athletes using...

Einstein Might Not Have Used Flashcards, But He Did Ride a Bike

A couple of years back I did a guest post for a cycling clothing site entitled, “Einstein Never Used Flashcards”.  It was an article written about kids, free-thinking, and exercise.  The idea came from a book that I was reading at the time and for some reason the concepts have been floating around my mind...

What To Do Now?

Following on from Darryl’s great ‘Do It Now’ post featured here yesterday, I wondered what things it would spark people into doing. This might not be as thought provoking as Darryl’s post or so centred in distant grey memories, but we’d like to help kick start some people into new challenges as the seasons...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
