Do your days begin to feel a time-squeeze with less daylight hours? Although the number of hours in the day stays the same, less daylight often makes me feel more rushed than ever. For many people, less time equals less cooking. I know this because it’s this aspect of life I work on most...

Penang Hill
Penang Hill is the largest mountain on the island, and at 2,411 feet is nothing to sneeze at. There’s a community at the top with restaurants and various touristy things, and a road that goes all the way up, but only those who live on the mountain are allowed to drive up. This is...

George Carlin State of Mind
It’s been over six years since we lost George Carlin, but his wise words still linger around the world. “We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve conquered the atom but not our prejudice. These are the days of two income Families, but more divorce….fancier houses but broken homes.”...

How to Fix a Stuck Cycling Jersey Zipper
Have you ever put on your favorite cycling jersey just to find out the zipper wouldn’t zip up? In our throw away society, it’s so easy to just toss something that isn’t working and buy a new one….right? Well, that’s not my style….especially here in Grenada where you learn to fix everything you can. Buying...

Loving the BITE: Easy Gourmet Boiled Potatoes on the Bike
This week, we’ve got an oldie but a goodie. For many decades (maybe even centuries?), athletes have been eating potatoes for fuel. At races. On rides. On runs. It’s a great choice. While many commercial sports products use maltodextrin as one ingredient in their mix, you can go to the source. When you eat potatoes, their starch readily...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
