A column written by M.D. Michael Yaremchuk sparked a few controversies. Yaremchuk claimed cycling is not a physical activity one should recommend to seniors because he recently had...

Loving the BITE: 2016 Whole-Food Delicious Christmas Dinner Menu

Sure, as dedicated cyclists, it’s good to see food as fuel for our bodies. Most of the time. But every once in awhile, it’s okay for food to be pure celebration. And fun. And joy. And, if you’re planning a Christmas or Holiday meal this month, it’s always good to set your menu early (because...

Loving the BITE: Delicious 3-Punch Powerhouse Soup

I’m freezing. Okay maybe not freezing, but with a high in the low teens today, it’s cold out there. And as we discussed in “Lean & Fit” Holiday topics in the past, it takes a bit of work to keep the veggies piling during the cold weather months. Well, this week’s recipe is warm,...

Okay, So Everysight’s Reality Smartglasses Caught My Attention

There is no shortage in the amount of new gadgets coming out on the market each month.  Even in the cycling world, I have seen so many new ideas flash across my screen this past year.  But when I heard about this one, it totally got excited in a techy good way. Seriously, this...

Yes, Even Cyclists Need Hair And Skin Care

Cycling and hair and skin problems are a topic seldom discussed. This is not because things like wind burn, wearing a helmet for long hours in high humidity, and getting an abrasion after a fall don’t affect hair and skin health, but because it’s considered sissy stuff. In fact, even women who bike don’t...

Loving the BITE: Stop Being a Tough Guy/Gal Cyclist

When you think of a tough guy or gal, what do you usually think of? For many athletes, it’s a picture of one that can go “without.” Without fluids. Without rest. Without recovery. Without fuel. Without = Tough. Believe it or not, this image dates back in history, even to the first “marathon.” I’ve...

Loving the BITE: Turkey Leftovers & Fit Holidays for Cyclists

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
