Loving the BITE: Let Your Food Be Your PAIN Medicine

We’ve heard it before. No pain. No gain. And we all know the feeling of being an athlete, in pain. Of course, there’s some pain that you ride through, and should (like the pain of pushing yourself). And there’s some pain that’s an indication to stop. Other pain, is more like soreness, and is...

Loving the BITE: 5 Things Cyclists Should Eat Daily

It’s not about them vs. us. There’s middle ground, to be sure. I’m not talking about the election (thank goodness!). I’m taking about food. While it’s easy to get sucked into a “one best” diet mentality and declare that your way of eating is superior to another, lemme tell you…I’ve been around this whole...

What is Your Favorite Pro Cyclist Doing This Off Season?

Between November and January of each year, our favorite pro cyclists enjoy what could be defined as the off season…..but how much off time do you think they actually have? Unfortunately I’m not good buddies with any of the pros, but from what I’ve read and heard over the years it all depends on...

Loving the BITE: Why Cyclists Should Eat Raw Garlic

Vampires. Of course, the primary reason cyclists should eat raw garlic is vampires. But aside from those long-fanged blood-suckers, there are a few other secondary reasons to eat it. This week, we’ve got one of my favorite fresh, whole garlic recipes, and what a bit of raw garlic can do for you on and...

Loving the BITE: Pumpkin Cookie Pedaling Fuel

Oh how I love a good cookie on a long ride. Lemon cookies, oatmeal, and peanut all power my pedealing from time to time. But, it’s autumn, and that can only mean one thing in baking world. Forgive me, but I’m giving into the pumpkin mania: Recipe of the Week: Dark Chocolate Pumpkin Cookies...

Second Hand Bicycle: Everything You Need To Bring Them Back To Life

It might seem strange to think about cycling, being out on your bike and getting outdoors in this climate. The weather has taken a cold turn and it feels as if the Christmas countdown has begun. But this means one thing, it is the perfect time to be spending hours in doors, in the...

Riding with the Tigra Sport TRIO

Okay, so who doesn’t like playing around with new cycling tech gadgets?  Yeah, so when the crew from Tigra Sport asked me if I’d like to try out their TRIO I was like “yeah, totally”. I asked them to send me an iPhone mount as well because if it’s going to be a device...

Furnishing Life with the Bike

I’ve always loved seeing pictures of bicycle inspired furniture and decorating, but hadn’t seen it live and in effect until coming to the Comox Valley. It seems like a bunch of my bike crazy friends have beautifully decorated their homes in a way that makes me totally jealous.  Yeah, they’ve got everything from a...

Loving the BITE: Gear Up with a Homemade Chai Latte

How about a Autumn afternoon Chai Latte to keep you warm or aide in recovery after a cold ride? Bringing Back the Riding with Music Debate

I’m honestly not much of a debater.  Further, I don’t generally jump into a heated discussion and try to voice my opinion.  But every so often, I step knowingly into the fire……just like I am once again. I’ve been cycling with music in my ears for like 10 years now.  I respect the argument...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
