Beanitos: Should You Become a BeanHead?

I came across Beanitos due to the fact that my friend @BeanitosApril works over there.  She gave my family some samples and we felt they were one super awesome healthy (ish) snack.  So to find out exactly how good and healthy they actually were, I had April send some to our Loving the Bike...

#bikeschool: Rule Britania

As we head towards the World Championships, which historically signifies the entry into the European winter and the slowing of professional UCI racing, I felt we should reflect on what an awesome season it’s been… for British riders & teams. Your favourite cycling magazine will have full season reviews in the coming weeks and...

You Deserve To Be Out There

You Deserve To Be Out There

One of the most popular fears I’ve seen from cyclists is the fear of riding out on busy roads.  I’ve seen tweets, received e-mails, and had people mention this following our Cycling 360 podcast on Fear.  It’s a valid concern and unfortunately it is something that keeps some people from riding their bikes.  ...

Loving the BITE: Cumin Grilled Chicken Breasts

September 8, 2011

I love this spice.  Most anytime I cook, no matter what I’m cooking, I’m tempted to start shaking it in.  And not with the little holes on the top of the spice container.  Nope.  I use the big gaping spoon-insert one.  Maybe I lack creativity and culinary know-how.  But you can’t argue with delicious...

September 7, 2011
By

We’re back with another segment in our “Let’s Talk” series of posts and this time around we’re talking about how you’d explain what it’s like to ride a bike to someone who’s never seen or ridden a bike in their lives. I’ve really been loving the response and comments we get from all of...

Make it Happen Monday: Simple Life Part 2

September 5, 2011
By

Last week’s Make it Happen Monday post was all about Living Simply in a not so simple Society and it sure did generate a lot of great feedback.  Some people left comments on the post, but a few others e-mailed me with fantastic personal feelings and their craving for a more simple life.  After...

Look Who’s Loving the Bike: September

David Buscarello – New York, NY “As a kid I rode everywhere in the neighborhood all day every day when weather permitted. Later I delivered newspapers by bike, full set of baskets on my Raleigh Sports 3 speed. Later on got the Raleigh Grand Prix, that was my mode of transport as a teen...

Loving the BITE: Pan-Fried Tofu with Lemongrass

September 1, 2011
By

Doufu anyone?  Not a typo; just a little Loving the Bite trivia.  This week’s key ingredient, tofu, is a staple of Asian cuisine, and just happens to go by “doufu” in China (“tofu” in Japan).  But what’s that got to do with cycling?  We all know that great cycling requires a healthy body –...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
