When I was in Munich recently I noticed something out of the ordinary for the US and Malaysia: everyone rode bikes. Sure there were lots of cars, too (mostly BMWs, Audis and Mercedes) but for many people the bike seemed to be primary transport. Munich is definitely a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly city. The sidewalks/bike...

Some Little Known Tour de France Statistics
This year’s Tour de France is long gone, and by now many of us have forgotten about all the superstars who bowed out in the early stages. Yeah, it was definitely another TdF that many will remember for a long time to come. Whether it’s the amount of big name riders who crashed out,...

Life’s Little Instructions
When I was younger, my Mom bought me a couple wall hangings called “Life’s Little Instructions”. They were full of great little sayings and were created by a Dad who wanted to pass on life lessons to his kids. I loved looking at them, and would often get reminded of the right lesson...

The School Run — Preparing Your Child To Cycle To School (and Get Fit!)
Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years, and in 2012 more than one third of children were overweight in the States. This is a staggering statistic for any parent to hear. It’s going to take time, but it’s not impossible to turn such numbers around on a household level. The...

Long Bike Back
Over a year ago, I posted about the journey of two guys cycling across the United States to promote the Share the Road message. Like all cyclists I know, I’m all for it and will do what I can to help get the word out there. Well, Pearson and Pete have completed their journey...

Robin Williams: Laughter, Cycling, Depression
I’ll never forget the first time I saw him, February 28, 1978…it was a Tuesday evening, and even for an imaginative ten year-old boy he was bazaar and seemed radically out of place, yet I was mesmerized. When Robin Williams showed up as Mork from Ork on “Happy Days”, I couldn’t get enough. I...

No Time to Ride
While I was home in the US I had lots of lofty goals for riding. I was going to go out on a bunch of my old routes, do a couple of centuries and help out my teammates at some races. I did just about none of these. I was able to get out...

Fist Pump Celebration
I’m all about celebrating small victories, especially those that happen on a bicycle. But something I experienced while on a ride last week helped remind me just how important it really is. I rode past a guy jogging as I made my way towards the airport where I looped around to come back. As...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
