With the risk of sounding like a beauty pageant contestant, I just wanted to say that world peace is a very cool concept. There are many reasons I don’t watch or follow the news, but the glorification of war and violence is high on the list. Maybe they should change the name of that...

Just Remember These 5 Words
Respect the Chain
The chain is arguably the most important part of any bike. Tubes and tires can easily be patched or fixed while riding. Broken spokes still allow you to get back home. Busted cables might make things a little difficult, but you’re still able to ride. But break or damage a chain while on the...

Strava Attack
Nothing can motivate a cyclist like a little friendly competition, and Strava definitely provides the framework to create challenges. Although I’ve had a Strava account since they first started up, I wouldn’t consider myself a Stravaholic like several cyclists around the world. But the other night I fell asleep thinking about a few of...

I Believe in the Sand Beneath my Toes
Call it manifesting your own dreams, or just simply going to where your soul knows you need to be. Whatever the reason, I absolutely know that I was meant to have the sand beneath my feet. Growing up in the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan, I was able to plant my toes in the sand……but...

Gross Personal Happiness
I can’t remember which of my Make it Happen posts it was that evoked this response from my friend David. I’ve had his comments sitting on my inbox since that time because it’s both enlightening and gratifying for me. So I thought I’d branch out from it and write a post. Here’s what David had to...

Weight Loss: It Takes More Than Cycling
Cycling is an incredible way to get in shape and lose weight, but with the risk of sounding kind of negative…..I’m here to say that it’s going to take more than just cycling. I can bust my butt each week with over a hundred miles of grueling training, but if I’m eating like crap...

Definition of Success
The word success is a funny thing….and what exactly is it anyway? We’re conditioned by the media and other influences around us that success equates to obtaining lots of money, owning a nice house and car, and having a position of status or power in the work you do. I don’t know about you,...

Are You Using Time or Saving It?
Are you going to spend your day Using your time or Saving it? As is always the case with me, I take my inspiration from the things that cross my path. Many times I find it in kind of out-of-the-way places. My newest piece of wisdom comes from the one and only, Jimmy Buffett. His...

We Need Nature as Much as Nature Needs Us
Earth Day 2014 happens tomorrow, April 22. Arguably one of the least celebrated holidays of the year. Unquestionably the most important one. A few years ago I wrote an article about the interaction between us and nature, and how each of us relies on the other for life. I don’t think its coincidence that it...

“Everything is Better Once I Get on My Bike”
The world’s crashing, there is stress all around……but once you jump on your bike and ride it all just seems to peel away. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about right? Everything is better once I get on my bike. I’m sure we’ve all said this phrase, but those were the exact words of...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
