Are You a Piler or Filer?
The terminology of Piler vs Filer might be mostly used to describe personality traits or organizational skills, but I think it can be applied to cycling as well. It all began when I was building Lego with my 7 year old Son. I had all the little pieces organized in bags so that he...

Bicycles Highlighted on New Travel Channel Series
Bicycles have not been given enough screen time on television programs, but thanks to Ryan van Duzer that’s about to change. You’ve seen me post about Ryan several times here on Loving the Bike. Loving the BITE: Quick Avocado Smoothie Meal
There are many reasons why athletes look to convenient ready-to-eat meal replacement drinks and bars. As noted, they are convenient. Ready to eat with no preparation. And, many of us, tend to be busy. When I first began working with serious athletes, I didn’t really anticipate the stress level that often occurs with busy schedules exacerbated...

I’m Still Proudly Repping Texas
My Family and I lived a total of 3 years in the beautiful city of Austin, Texas. That equates to only about 7% of my life….but it was enough for me to consider it home. Even though we’re Canadians, my entire Family actually considers it home. I miss the city, the bike culture, and...

Tired of forking over a buck or more every time you want a gel, bar, or drink for each hour of your ride? Many times, me too. When weight (or lack thereof) is a priority on very long rides, and I simply want convenience from commercially available light-weight products, gels are one of...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
