I’m not saying that cyclists need to take energy gels or bloks, but if you’re going to take them I do feel that you need to use the ones that work best with your body. As I’ve said many times before, I don’t promote a product just because they support this website or pay...

I’m not exactly a mountain biker, but from what I know about it I wouldn’t expect Florida to be a hotspot for this sport. Last week we introduced a monthly mountain bike article from our friends at Singletracks, and it received a great response from our readers. Greg will be back again each month...

After last month’s ‘What to do next’ post I thought I’d get a closer look at Cross racing and headed to London’s Alexandra Palace for the Rapha Super Cross 2012 All photos courtesy of Rapha Although I might not have been competing this year, the fun, the bikes, the mud and of course the...

Quite a while ago our Family decided to make Sundays an electronic free day, meaning we wouldn’t use the TV, Computer, Phone, or any other similar device. We’re not generally electronic obsessed, but for this one day a week we make sure to keep them off and totally focus on quality Family time. It’s...

If you’re dragging throughout the morning, clinging to your coffee, starving by 10 am, or craving sugar or carbs all day, your breakfast could be to blame. A bowl of flakes high in carbohydrates and low in fiber, healthy fats and proteins just won’t sustain most athletes until lunch. Certainly wouldn’t sustain me. If you’re...

What if you were heading off to ride in a location that does not have the convenience and availability found in a local bike shop? What would you do to ensure you aren’t left sitting out due to a minor repair that you can’t fix immediately? I’ve been slowly dropping more and more details...

How do you make an inspirational story even better? Add cycling to it. Last week I viewed the Rwanda Cycling Team documentary called Rising From Ashes and I can honestly say it’s one of the best films I’ve ever seen. Any movie that leaves me feeling fired up and motivated is two thumbs up in...

Is it possible to have an entire years meals planned based on an athlete’s particular training program? Kelli’s Answer: Although its sounds perfect to have a meal plan that correlates well with a training program, all laid out for a year, in my experience, it simply doesn’t work well (sorry). This is why I...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
