Reckless Cycling

I’m in no way trying to promote reckless cycling in any way, but I wanted to get a feel for how all of you label your riding.  Are you conservative, reckless, adventurous, scared?  What kind of adjective would you use for yourself? I sat down for a minute to think of what word first...

Loving the Bike TV: Stay In Your Element

August 26, 2015

Okay, so I love being in my element in everything I do.  Sure, I may seem like I’m an extrovert….but it’s only when I’m in a situation where I feel totally at home and comfortable.  I’m all about my element and do all I can to stay right there in it as much as...

What Has Being Impatient Done For Me?

I can honestly still remember the very first time I ever made a purchase in a store all by myself.  I was nervous, anxious, and shy.  Upon paying for the item, I quickly asked the lady checking me out if I could get a bag.  Her response stays with me to this day…..”Didn’t your...

A while back, we did a Cycling 360 podcast about what we would tell our younger self when just getting started with road cycling, and I thought it would be cool to come up with the same sort of advice for Loving Life off the Bike as well. In this edition of Loving the...

Time: Living vs Passing Time

If finding the time were not an issue, we’d all ride 500 miles a week…right?  Unfortunately, most of us have to squeeze in our rides between work, family, and other commitments we have in our lives.  I am fortunate to get out for quite a few miles each week…..but it’s funny, the more I...

Buy Experiences Not Stuff

I don’t hide the fact that I find the “throwaway” culture of North America totally disgusting.  Yeah, we’re a society of buy all we can, and toss out anything that isn’t the latest and greatest. We’re consumed by stuff, and by having more of it.  You just have to look at the increasing number...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
