It’s been about a year and a half since the “Shit Cyclists Say” video went viral and spurned a bunch of similar type posts. My buddy, Ryan van Duzer was the star of the original video (which has had well over a million views) and it’s still the best of the bunch. It’s been long...

Shit Cycling Climbers Say
Do you see the cow too?
It’s never good news when awakened by a phone call at midnight. One of my oldest and dearest friends passed away on Sunday night. I never went back to sleep. I felt physically and emotionally exhausted on Monday morning. There were people to call and meetings to cancel. There were plans to be made. I...

Loving the BITE: Ultimate Joint Health Smoothie
I’ve definitely been on a joint-health-kick lately. It’s been all ginger and cherries here at Loving the Bite Joint Health Headquarters. And this week, it’s pineapple and bromelain. Joint health has been on my mind for good reason. We’ve discussed how cyclists can put their knees through almost 5000 flexions and extensions every hour. And that’s just...

Adrenaline
You’ve seen the video of me cycling the roads here in Grenada. They really aren’t as scary as I make them out to be….it’s my rebel without a clue attitude that puts me in some very precarious situations. Yes, it’s probably as scary as I make it look. But that’s me. For some...

Bicycle Culture by Design: This TEDx Talk Rocks
I could have just put this video link on social media, but it is so much more worthy than just a simple tweet or post. This TEDx Talk came out in 2012, but I just happened across it today. It blew my cycling mind. “50 million people a year are injured in car accidents. 1.2...

Everything Matters
This is a story about the bike community. On Tuesday, this Tweet appeared in my timeline: Sold my bike and now I’m sad. Decision I had to go with for now though. Ho hum. I’ll be living through all of you for a while. — velohut | kristin (@velohut) April 29, 2014 If you...

Busy….Means You’re Not Doing It Right
Yeah, I’m guilty of sometimes saying “sorry I haven’t been in touch….I’ve just been so busy”. I know I’m not the only one using this perfect little excuse now, am I? If I was being completely honest, I should actually say, “sorry dude, you just haven’t been at the top of my priority list….nor...

Pattern Interrupted
We go about our daily lives doing pretty much the same thing. Work. Eat. Sleep. Ride. We spend time with family, hanging out with friends, and making plans for vacations. We stress out in traffic, complain about politics, and binge-watch our favorite shows. The list of what we take for granted is endless. But...

Loving the BITE: Just Add Salt
I’m not usually a fan of “almost.” I like done. I like to be all-in. Go big, or go home, right?!? I get summit fever as much as anyone and hate to “almost” finish a ride, climb, or run. I almost never let “almost” stand. However, in some instances, I have to admit that...

10 Miles of Total Diversity
Most days, my bike ride consists of 10 miles up the East coast of Grenada and another 10 miles or more back down to the South where my business is located. Yeah, a 20 mile daily ride which I equate to riding something like 30 miles anywhere else due to the hills and road conditions here....

We Need Nature as Much as Nature Needs Us
Earth Day 2014 happens tomorrow, April 22. Arguably one of the least celebrated holidays of the year. Unquestionably the most important one. A few years ago I wrote an article about the interaction between us and nature, and how each of us relies on the other for life. I don’t think its coincidence that it...

City Bike Holidays in European Towns
I’m not really a city biker, but man would I love to spend a few months doing it in Europe. Our friends over at Momondo have put together this infographic with bicycle sightseeing routes, and what the cycling scene is like in places like Paris, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Nice.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
