We Just Had To Get Involved, “Crank It Up”
Nutrition Tip April 29 2010
Dehydration can negatively impact your cycling or athletic performance. Over-hydrating can also do the same to your performance. No more than about 80ml (about 1/3 of a cup) of water or diluted sport drink should be chugged back over a 10-20 minute time period throughout your ride or race.

Reinventing the Wheel
I wonder what today’s cycling races would look like if riders were still using those bone shaker steel wheels from the 1800’s? Not a pretty site now is it? Well, lucky for us the bicycle wheel has continuously improved, and improved further in order to provide us with speed, comfort, and better performance. Loving the...

Indie
It was the proudest cycling moment I’ve ever had, and it didn’t even involve my bike. The day was April 22, 2010… the moment you became a cyclist. You are only 4 years old, and already part of a magnificent community. A population of riders who’s lives are better, because they ride a bike...

Bike On Earth Day
April 22 has been a day that I’ve made a point of recognizing for at least the past 18 years or so. Also known as Earth Day, I’ve made it a day that I do my best to honor the earth. With this year being the first Earth Day with Loving the Bike, I...

Amazing Cycling Families
It is no surprise that I’m a huge fan of the Vogel family from www.familyonbikes.org….the amazing family in the process of cycling from Alaska to the furthest tip of Argentina. They’ve been at it for about two years and currently located just outside of Lima, Peru. But these guys are just one of the incredible...

A Closet Biking Spitter Speaks
Okay, I have to let you know that I don’t think I come across as a vulgar, gross, or raunchy type of guy in my day to day life. Just wanted to set that straight before diving into a blog post all about spitting. On a day to day basis, I don’t spit. I...

Better By Bike/Share the Road
I started to write today’s post as more of an informative type article and just when I had about wrapped it up, I decided to go back and start over. I had the feeling that what I had down was going to majorly bore my readers with too much information. I still might have...

Good Weather Turned Bad
Okay, so what do you do when you’ve been out riding for the past month and all of a sudden you’re sent back in to winter in just a turn of a day? Well for me it entailed a bunch of “I can’t believe this”, “WTF”, and “I can’t freaking believe this”. Riding season...

Life Without You
What would life be like without the bike? Pretty hard to imagine now isn’t it? I’ve loved the bike for a very long time, but it wasn’t until recently that I formed that heartfelt emotion with it, and the knowing of just how important bikes really are. I could go on and on about...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
