You all remember my Do Good bicycle friend, Rob Greenfield, right? Rob’s the awesomely crazy one who cycled across the US last summer to promote sustainability. It was one incredible journey and he captured a lot of attention along the way. Here’s a brief summary of how minimal he was during his 4,700 mile...

Goodfluence Bicycle Tour Across America
Bike Freedom
Everything about a bike says freedom. As a kid, riding a bike was the first time I spread my wings and left the front of my house, ventured off my block, and explored my neighborhood. Those joyful feelings I experienced back then are still with me decades later every time I ride. Last Thursday I...

A Cyclists First Time Doing the Boulder Boulder 10K
Have you ever sat back and thought about your firsts? At the time they occurred they were game changers weren’t they? Remember the first time you rode a bicycle without any help or training wheels, or how about your first kiss, the first time you fell in love, the first time your heart was...

Loving the BITE: I Scream for this EASY Coconut Milk Ice Cream
We’ve only got a few more days in May…then, it’s officially June. Officially time for ice cream. I’ve provided this simple recipe in summers past, and thought I’d revive it just as it’s getting hot in 2014. I just so happen to have organic frozen mango chunks in my freezer…just waiting to become Mango Coconut...

The Little Things
My love of cycling can be complex, especially this time of the year, as I explained last week. Some days it takes all my effort to get kitted up and out the door. Most of the time, though, my love of cycling has nothing to do with what it does for my health, that...

Loving the BITE: Delicious Balsamic Dressing that could Change Your Health
Here’s a shocker: I think more of our foods should be made at home. I think when you buy a prepared food at the store, the time you save with buying it rather than making it should be spent checking (and double checking) the ingredients list. I think athletes can stay healthy, recover better, train...

Back in the Saddle
I’ve been absent on here, and for that I’m sorry. I’ve been in a bit of a funk in all sorts of ways for various reasons. Since the last time I posted, I brought home a stray puppy from one of my mountain bike rides and integrated her into life, which now includes shopping...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
