Pattern Interrupted

Pattern Interrupted

We go about our daily lives doing pretty much the same thing. Work. Eat. Sleep. Ride. We spend time with family, hanging out with friends, and making plans for vacations. We stress out in traffic, complain about politics, and binge-watch our favorite shows. The list of what we take for granted is endless. But...

Road Trip: Connecting #IRL

If you’re lucky, “social media” allows you to make connections beyond the computer. There’s an initial common bond – in my case, cycling – that becomes more. Over the years, I’ve been able to meet many people in person that I first met on Twitter. I’ve met people from California, Seattle, Florida, Utah, and right...

Living Free

In January, I left the corporate world and hung up a shingle of my own. Without a doubt, this was one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever made. I no longer have the security of a regular paycheck, paid healthcare, or a daily routine in the traditional sense. Nope, I left that behind and...

A Kicker to Picnic Table

A Kicker to Picnic Table

A few years ago, the Chicago Park District took otherwise wasted space under the expressway on Logan Boulevard and turned it into a skate park. Typically, space under the expressway is filled with broken bottles, garbage, and is pretty uninviting. I think this is an awesome way to utilize more than an acre of land...

Looking for Windows

Looking for Windows

Anyone who rides a bike understands “the window” − a brief period of time when you head out for a ride because you know it won’t happen otherwise. Could be a small clearing on the weather radar map. Or the time between waking up and having to head to the office. Or sometimes it’s...

The Wave

The Wave

I spent a lazy Saturday morning sipping coffee while watching Ronde van Drenthe, the opening race of the UCI World Cup series in Hoogeveen, Netherlands. It was a rare live online broadcast of a women’s pro cycling event; how could I not watch? It had everything I love about bike racing at this time...

Women and Wheels

In honor of Women’s History Month, here are some of my favorite pics of women on two wheels and woman-focused art. I love when I see a cool girl on a bike and she lets me take her photo.   Ok, not a bicycle, but she’s too cool not to include. And last, me....

40 degrees! What’s that going to feel like?

40 degrees! What’s that going to feel like?

And more importantly, what should I wear? It looks like the weather might break here in Chicago. Predictions of temps in the 40s for next week leave me yearning for long rides and much-needed stress relief. It’s going to feel downright warm after the frigid temps that we’ve experienced. As cyclists, we obsess over...

Art and Bikes: An Artist Profile

Art and Bikes: An Artist Profile

Bicycles have been inspiring artists since their invention. For one Chicago cyclist, the bike is not only for physical activity, social interaction, and transportation to the coffee shop, but also for artistic expression. “Bikes are beautiful. They’re mechanical and works of art themselves,” says architect and illustrator Robert Isaac. Robert’s illustration was featured at ARTCRANK...

20 Chicago Type Photos

As a writer and designer, letters and words are a large part of my life — beyond what we all use in our daily life. I use words to tell a story, to evoke emotion, and to compel an action. So too do street artists whose work I see throughout the city. I’m fascinated...

All this for a bike swap?

The alarm went off before sunrise. After all, if you’re going to drive almost three hours to a bike swap, you need to get an early start. I glanced out the window and my first thought was that it was foggy outside. No, it was in fact, snowing. Again. Winter in Chicago has been...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
