4 Critical Steps to Take After a Bicycle Accident

Bicycle accidents can happen at any time. Even if you are the safest cyclist on the road and wear all the right gear, there’s no guarantee that you won’t be involved in a collision at some point in your life. Regardless of who is at fault, injuries from a bicycle accident can be physically...

Panniers and Paninis

Panniers and Paninis

I’ve honestly never ridden a bike with a set of panniers.  I guess it’s because I’ve never gone bicycle touring or had a reason to carry things with them on the ride. But I have finally had a need for panniers, so I contacted my friends at Detours to see if they could set...

The Smell of Bicycle Commuting

The Smell of Bicycle Commuting

Yesterday on Twitter I gave a virtual high five to everyone who responded saying they had ridden to work that day.  All of us who ride our bikes to work can be lumped together as commuters, but the variety within this category differs greatly.  Some get their road bike training in on the way...

Pick Up and Delivery by Bicycle

August 16, 2013
By

I might not have mentioned it enough times in the past, but I’m the proud owner of a bicycle café in the Caribbean called Mocha Spoke.  I also commute to work by bike 99% of the time….so my work life is pretty much as bikey as possible. During the day we’re quite often in need...

Dealing With a Job Change as a Bicycle Commuter

June 7, 2013
By

A job change can definitely shake up your world, but it could also be what enables you to become a bicycle commuter.  Last July, one of my online friends switched jobs and in doing so the distance to work went from being 3 miles to 11.5.  Here’s the story of how this job change, and becoming...

3 Tips for Getting your Bike Through the Winter Commuting Season:

February 1, 2013
By

So you are hardcore enough to brave the elements this winter and ride to work.  Good for you!  It’s so much more difficult to motivate yourself to ride in the morning when you know that Mother Nature is not going to gently embrace you with a thousand warm kisses of the sunrise.  No instead,...

A Lifelong Commitment to the Bike

A Lifelong Commitment to the Bike

Do you have a lifelong commitment to the Bike?  I received a comment to our 2013 “#LuckyYear” post from Derrick Fogle who explained his “lifelong commitment”.  I liked the sound of it and immediately asked if he’d be interested in supplying a guest post on the subject.  He jumped at my suggestion, and I’m...

Lighting It Up

You’ve never seen me review bicycle lights here before, and that’s because I don’t ride at dusk, dawn, or in the dark…..until now. When we were living in Austin (and in Canada prior to that), I was able to ride pretty much when I wanted to and always had tons of sunlight shining on...

Top 4 Items for a Winter Bike Commute

It is pretty easy to get up in the morning, grab a cup-a-joe and hop on the bike to ride to work…when it’s warm out.  However, cold weather presents an entirely new group of challenges.  It seems like the colder it gets, the harder it is for me to just get out of bed,...

Loving the Commute: Back to the Basics

September 18, 2012
By

I love to ride my bike, almost as much as I like to play classic games. It’s a shame you can’t do both at the same time. I can say that most of the time my train of thought eventually leads back to some aspect of cycling. I started commuting by bike as part...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
