Après Vélo: My Highest Quality Cycling Shirts

Okay, so I just might have like enough cycling t-shirts where I can wear a different one for each day of the month.  I love them all equally, and am always proud to be promoting the cycling lifestyle through my clothing.  But I was recently sent some gear from Après Vélo, and they are...

Loving the BITE: Best-Ever Cabbage Slaw for Delicious Tacos

Seriously, is there really anything better than a great taco? I mean really. These are the important questions in life. And my answer right now (I’m hungry): No, there’s not. And, while I grew up on, and still love the classic ground beef, beans, cheese variety, my taco-tastes have changed a bit. Every year,...

Loving the BITE: Cold-Brewed Coffee for Summer Caffeine

It’s cold-brew season. Aka summer (or close enough, anyway). Just a few weeks ago, we discussed cold-brew green tea. Yes, please. Today, it’s cold brew coffee. Why, you ask? Deliciousness. Ease. Happy-belly-low-acidity – if you’re a coffee-lover with acid reflux, give this one a try. Better flavor. And, of course, it’s cold for hot...

Food on the Go….on and off the Bike

For as long as I can remember, my typical lunch has been a protein bar or shake.  Yeah, some people say that is not real food and shouldn’t be ingested as a daily meal, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The benefits to me are that it’s quick, nutritious, and I don’t...

Loving the BITE: Homemade Mayo – Condiment Swap

Not long ago, I made a mayonnaise for the first time. From. Scratch. I don’t know why I never tried before. I guess I kinda just gave up on mayo. I had replaced it with avocados (highly recommended) in many recipes, but still, sometimes, a little mayo would be good (like when trying to...

My f’d up Life in Paradise

When people hear that I lived in the Caribbean, they always seem so jealous and talk about how it must have been paradise.  But paradise is a word that is often used so incorrectly. Sure there was great beaches, hot weather, and lush greenery everywhere…..but paradise goes so much deeper, and includes everything that...

JustFly Explores Toronto Bike Paths

Toronto is a simply massive city. Home to over six million people across the Greater Toronto Area, driving in the city can be a massive pain. This leads many to take public transit or grab their bike and hit the road in a more environmentally friendly fashion. But, in a city so large it...

Loving the BITE: Peanut Butter Dates for your Ride

It all started with salted dates. About 3 years ago, I posted about salted dates as a great training fuel. Many of my clients and readers regularly use them for their carbohydrates and sodium on a ride. Today, we’re taking up a notch. For a more substantial fuel option, maybe as the “whole food” you...

My First Time With Helmet Hair

Yes, it’s true…..for the first time in like forever, I have hair.  I’ve been shaving my head for so long that most people I know didn’t even realize I could even grow hair.  But for the past couple months I’ve been letting it grow, and I’m now faced with the issue of helmet hair....

Canadian….again

It’s only fitting that this post is coming out on Victoria Day.  My first time being in Canada for a National holiday in about six or seven years. Better known as the “May Long”, it’s the un-official kick off to summer in this country of mine.  But for me it is so much more...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
