I’m Still Proudly Repping Texas

My Family and I lived a total of 3 years in the beautiful city of Austin, Texas.  That equates to only about 7% of my life….but it was enough for me to consider it home.  Even though we’re Canadians, my entire Family actually considers it home. I miss the city, the bike culture, and...

When we moved to Grenada, I really thought the product reviews done by myself would stop.  It’s quite difficult and expensive to bring things in to the Caribbean so I moved here realizing that receiving fantastic products from great companies had come to an end. But there’s been a few products I’ve reviewed and...

Our friend Bob reviews a set of prescription sunglasses from ADS Sports Eyewear…a company who supplies online prescriptions sunglasses for cyclists and other athletes. Riding a Trainer in Paradise?

Riding a Trainer in Paradise?

When you live on the tropical Caribbean island of Grenada, why would you ever want to ride inside on a trainer?  Well, if you’re me….you don’t. I’ve written many times before how I just can’t get into riding my bike indoors on a trainer.  I guess that’s a major reason why I’ve done what...

Betty Designs: Kits For More Than Just Pretty Girls and Triathletes

Talk about being impressed by the service of a company…what Betty Designs went through to get me one of their kits is downright incredible. Before getting into the story of how this complementary Graffiti bib short and jersey came to me, let’s talk a little about what this kick butt sports clothing company is...

Locking Your Bicycle 101

You’d think that selecting a lock and using it to keep your bike safe would be a fairly basic thing, but there’s a lot more to it.  The crew over at Kryptonite are taking it upon themselves to make sure that cyclists make informed decisions with their bike security, and we’re here to help...

Lighting It Up

You’ve never seen me review bicycle lights here before, and that’s because I don’t ride at dusk, dawn, or in the dark…..until now. When we were living in Austin (and in Canada prior to that), I was able to ride pretty much when I wanted to and always had tons of sunlight shining on...

The Sufferfest: The Wretched Review

The Sufferfest: The Wretched Review

There comes a time in every cyclists’ season when the gluttony of an extra spoon of sugar in the coffee or a cheeky pain au chocolat or three over the winter catches up with them and something snaps. When that happens and the balance of treacle sponge versus training regime swings towards the more...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
